I remember having seen the first movie a few years ago, without many memories about the story but that didn't stop the movie to be at least entertaining for what it should be in the basics and that taking into account that after this movie, the current DC universe will be rebooted...so it's not even clear if what you see here would have importance later so the story itself might not end up very transcendental...
...But what there was of history to get to this movie was arriving last week (because this was last week, but now I have the chance to write about it) with two friends to the movie theater, and the other two took a few minutes to arrive so we ended up entering the movie a few minutes late. While I don't know how much was seen at the beginning of the movie or if we actually missed a few important minutes, it seemed like we got there just in time to find out at least...something that was going on in the movie.
Right now I think it goes without saying that, with how recently this movie was released, the review is going to have spoilers for things that may happen in it as well as my own observations. If you've already seen it or don't care about the risk of spoilers, then you can read on...but you've been warned either way.
Recuerdo haber visto la primera película hace unos años atrás, sin muchos recuerdos sobre la historia pero eso no impidió que la película quera al menos entretenida para lo que debía ser en lo básico y eso tomando en cuenta que tras esta película, el universo actual de DC será reiniciado...así que ni está claro si lo que se ve aquí tendría importancia después por lo cual la historia en sí podría no terminar muy trascendental...
...Pero lo que si hubo de historia para llegar a esta pelicula fue llegar la semana pasada (porque esto fue la semana pasada, pero ahora es que tengo oportunidad de escribir de ello) con dos amigos al cine, y que los otros dos se tardaron unos minutos en llegar así que terminamos entrando a la película algunos minutos tarde. Aunque no conozco que tanto se vió al principio de la película o si realmente nos perdimos unos minutos importantes, parecía que llegamos justo para enterarnos de al menos...algo que estaba pasando en la película.
Ahora mismo creo que sobra decir que, con lo reciente que es el lanzamiento de esta película, la reseña va a tener spoilers de cosas que puedan suceder en ella así como mis propias observaciones. Si ya la viste o no te interesa el riesgo de spoilers, entonces puedes seguir leyendo...pero estás avisado en cualquier caso.
Shazam 2: The Return of the Shazamdwich
When we arrived, we were watching two of Atlas' daughters make a mess in a museum turning people to stone, while Billy along with his family were doing the one about being superheroes as a team two years later, trying to save people from a collapsing bridge...only in the end they couldn't stop the bridge from falling and the news called it as an incident caused by them, the Philadelphia failures.
Billy Batson is frustrated with the recent failures they've had as superheroes plus when he tries to get the attention of the others, they seem to be focused on other things rather than what he brings up. On the other hand, we end up seeing Freddy at high school meet a new girl who he starts talking to? and on another side of the world, the Sorcerer is seen still alive after (by all accounts) apparently having turned to dust in the first movie, only captive in a dungeon where the sisters of Atlas, angry to regain the power that was stolen by the priest of the gods, force him to activate his power with a magic staff that would give them much of the power they sought to regain to wreak havoc on the human world.
While the rest seek to do their own things with their powers, Billy at one point receives a signal sent by the Sorcerer...in the form of a dream where he expects to be on a date with Wonder Woman. Only when Wonder Woman's face comes into view...she has the face of the Sorcerer, shouting the message of disaster for which she must prepare.
...Yeah, at least there were a few intentionally funny moments out of the movie, instead of the "Giant Head Modok with Mini Butt in Armor" that always got a chuckle out of me every time he showed up in Ant-Man Quantumania. But that's one movie and this is another, so let's move on to something else.
Cuando llegamos, estabamos viendo a dos de las hijas de Atlas hacer un desastre en un museo convirtiéndo a gente en piedra, mientras que Billy junto con su familia estaban haciendo la de ser superhéroes en equipo dos años después, intentando salvar a la gente de un puente que se estaba derrumbando...solo que al final no pudieron detener que se cayera el puente y los noticieros lo llamaron como un incidente causado por ellos, los fracasos de Philadelphia.
Billy Batson se ve frustrado con los fallos recientes que han tenido como superhéroes además de cuando intenta llamar la atención de los otros, parecen estar concentrados en otras cosas más que en lo que él plantea. Por otra parte, terminamos viendo que Freddy en el liceo conoce a una chica nueva con la que empieza a hablar...y en otro lado del mundo, el Hechicero se ve aún con vida después de (por lo que dicen) aparentemente haberse convertido en polvo en la primera película, solo que cautivo en un calabozo en el que las hermanas de Atlas, iracundas por retomar el poder que fue robado por el sacerdote de lo dioses, lo fuerzan a activar su poder con un báculo mágico que les daría gran parte del poder que buscaban recueprar para hacer destrozos en el mundo humano.
Mientras que el resto busca hacer sus propias cosas con sus poderes, Billy en un momento recibe una señal enviada por el Hechicero...en forma de un sueño donde espera a estar en una cita con la Mujer Maravilla. Solo que cuando se le ve el rostro a la Mujer Maravilla...tiene el rostro del hechizero, gritándole el mensaje del desastre para el cual se tiene que preparar.
...Si, al menos salieron unos cuantos momentos chistosos de la película de manera intencional, en vez de el "Modok Cabeza Gigante con Mini Trasero en armadura" que siempre me sacaba las risas cada vez que aparecía en Ant-Man Quantumania. Pero esa es una película y esta es otra, asi que vamos a seguir con algo más.
The predictable and the unpredictable

I have to be clear that there are things that, knowing the style of superhero movie that it is, the main plot had to be predictable to some extent in the resolution of things, but at the same time there were a few details with interesting twists (even if the outcome was the same). I would say one of these is that Annie, the girl who was talking to Freddy, turned out to be Atlas' third daughter: Anthea. One of my friends was saying "THAT'S THE BAD ONE" before the part about a third daughter was revealed, and while it seemed kind of a joke that he could draw that conclusion so soon from being involved with Freddy, I still don't know how to take the fact that he correctly guessed that twist, as if he had read the intent of her appearances so soon. And when Freddy finds out...it's because the other two also came to kidnap him and put up an energy dome that has the city trapped.
Tengo que estar claro que hay cosas que, sabiendo el estilo de película de superhéroe que es, la trama principal debía de ser predecible hasta cierto punto en la resolución de las cosas, pero a la vez habían unos pocos detalles con giros interesantes (aunque el resultado haya sido el mismo). Diría que uno de estos es que Annie, la chica quien hablaba con Freddy, resultara ser la tercera hija de Atlas: Anthea. Uno de mis amigos estaba diciendo "ESA ES LA MALA" antes de que se revelara la parte de una tercera hija, y mientras que parecía algo chiste de que pudiera sacar esa conclusión tan pronto por verse involucrado con Freddy, aún no se cómo tomar el hecho de que adivinó correctamente ese giro, como si hubiera leído la intención de sus apareciones tan pronto. Another twist that was being shown but quite clearly with certain moments was the idea that Kalypso, the second daughter of Atlas, was looking more and more unstable with her wrathful intentions to kill humans and use the golden apple to plant the apple of life in the human world only to bring them horrors instead of using it on their land as they had planned, and with how much she was looking forward to revenge against the land rather than retribution for her land, it will have been surprise the moment when she betrays Hespera from behind. ...but you could see it coming at some point that he would follow his own impulsive plan.
What came as not particularly expected (but also not THAT shocking after the first moment) was the power of the staff having the ability to take away the powers of the champions, first leaving Freddy defenseless and then the rest becoming powerless after fighting Kalypso, along with Anthea who also receives an attack from her and becomes a powerless human. This is what leaves Billy as the only fighter with powers to face the villain of the day, but while that happens, the monsters by the planted tree destroy the city...
...And then the wizard who managed to escape from the dungeon with Freddy (long story but to make a long story short, they were helped by Anthea because of how they got along at the beginning of the movie, end) tells them that what the released monsters fear the most...are unicorns. According to her description, grim creatures, very fierce and hostile against humans, but they can be appeased by the nectar sweet of the gods that is ambrosia. Or the next best thing.

...which I didn't really pick up when I saw the movie that they were Skittles, but you can tell they're colorful candies...so yeah, Skittles-
THE UNICORNS TASTED RAINBOWS AND WERE TAMED TO SAVE THE CITY FROM THE CREATURES!!!
I can already imagine how much of a joke this scene was taken for, although I suppose not so much for the joke of using Skittles to tame dark unicorns, but for "being a publicity stunt". But anyway, back to the last fight.
At one point, Anthea (without powers) is confronted by Kalypso and the world-eating dragon he released to get to earth, which is shown earlier to be able to paralyze people with fear with its roars...and Freddy manages to get close to try to save her without stopping in fear. That moment is made with the intention of showing that he was willing to do anything to save her despite the fear...but the truth is I didn't realize that detail until a minute after the scene, for which Billy arrived to save them by the dragon's tail, and then there a few minutes later if we get to the last fight.
Billy realizes that the staff absorbs power like a battery and that it could destroy the dragon by overloading it, so he gets Hespera, who was still alive but dying, to make the barrier she placed to trap Kalypso with her dragon and Billy in the space where they planted the tree of life smaller. And with that plan, he stole the staff to overload it with the magical energy of the fire of the dragon that was trying to destroy him...until he manages to explode the staff with energy to destroy the dragon and Kalypso.
But Billy ends up dead.
Despite how his family tries to wake him up thinking it was just another prank (or waiting for the typical trope that he survived by the skin of his teeth), he actually ends up dead. They even end up giving him a funeral buried in the land of the gods, while talking about how the only way to revive the dead land they had was with the magic of a god. And there was no one left alive.
Otro giro que se estaba mostrando pero de forma bastante clara con ciertos momentos era la idea de que Kalypso, la segunda hija de Atlas, se veía cada vez más y más inestables con sus intenciones iracundas de matar humanos y utilizar la manzana dorada para plantar la manzana de la vida en el mundo humano solo para traerles horrores en vez de usarlo en su tierra como tenían planeado, y con lo mucho que se veía con ganas de venganza contra la tierra más que retribución por su tierra, habrá sido sorpresa el momento cuando traiciona a Hespera por la espalda...pero se veía venir en algún momento que seguiría su propio plan impulsivo.

...Y en eso el hechicero que logró escapar del calabozo con Freddy (larga historia pero para resumir, fueron ayudados por Anthea por cómo se llevaban al principio de la pelícua, fin) les dice que lo que más temen los monstruos liberados...son los unicornios. Según su descripción, criaturas sombrías, muy feroces y hostiles contra los humanos, pero pueden ser apaciguados por el dulce de nectar de los dioses que es la ambrosia. O lo más parecido.
CON EL PODER DE LOS SKITTLES

Ya me puedo imaginar lo mucho que se tomó para chiste esta escena, aunque supongo que no tanto por el chiste de usar caramelos para domar unicornios oscuros, sino por "ser una treta publicitaria". Pero en fin, de vuelta a la última pelea.
En un momento, Anthea (sin poderes) es enfrentada por Kalypso y el dragón devoramundos que liberó para llegar al a tierra, el cual se muestra antes capaz de paralizar a la gente de miedo con sus rugidos...y Freddy logra acercarse a intentar salvarla sin detenerse del miedo. Ese momento se ve hecho con la intención de mostrar que estaba dispuesto a todo para salvarla a pesar del miedo...pero la verdad no me di cuenta de ese detalle hasta un minuto después de la escena, para el cual Billy llegó a salvarlos por la cola del dragón, y entonces ahí unos minutos después si llegamos a la última pelea.
Billy se da cuenta de que el báculo absorbe poder como una batería y que podría destruir al dragón sobrecargándola, así que consigue que Hespera, quien aún seguía con vida pero moribunda, hiciera más pequeña la barrera que colocó para atrapar a Kalypso con su dragón y a Billy en el espacio donde plantaron el arbol de la vida. Y con ese plan, le robó el báculo para sobrecargarlo con la energía mágica del fuego del dragón que intentaba destruirlo...hasta que logra hacer explotar el báculo con energía para destruir el dragón y a Kalypso.
Pero Billy termina muerto.
A pesar de como su familia busca despertarlo pensando que era otra broma (o esperar el típico tropo de que sobrevivió por los pelos), de verdad termina muerto. Hasta terminan dándole un funeral enterrado en la tierra de los dioses, mientras que hablan que la única forma de reavivar la tierra muerta que tenían ellos era con la magia de un dios. Y ya no quedaba ninguno vivo.

I couldn't think of anything else to highlight the joke in that last paragraph.
By the time I saw it, it was a movie that served its simple functions of action moments, emotional moments (mostly with the plot of Billy having to grow up with everything changing around him), and the jokes that came out wide. It was another movie to remember that I watched with my friends and enjoyed because of it, but just like Quantumania...maybe not one to remember per se the movie outside of one-off moments. Not that I think it's bad, but I did have to refresh my mind a bit on the basic plot as I had somehow already forgotten it to some extent due to the fact that I saw this was last week.
It's kind of strange to think that it's now two superhero movies in a row that I go to see with friends, laugh with them about things in the movie, walk out of the theater and days later don't think much about it again, plus see on the internet the mediocre at best, sour at worst, reception of these movies. And in both cases the box office hasn't paid off much, which I think is notable with how in this film as well as Quantumania, the theater wasn't packed with people.
So what I can say about this movie in the end is...it's a movie. With more coherence and (marginally) better reception than Quantumania, but still a movie, only with the benefit that I laughed more at the jokes in the movie than at the ridiculous things the movie itself did.

Para cuando la ví, fue una película que cumplió con sus funciones simples de momentos de acción, momentos emocionales (más que todo con la trama de Billy teniendo que crecer con todo lo que cambia a su alrededor), y los chistes que salían de par en par. Fue otra película para recordar que ví con mis amigos y disfruté por ello, pero así como Quantumania...quizás no una para recordar en sí la película fuera de momentos puntuales. No es que piense que sea mala, pero si tuve que refrescarme un poco la mente sobre la trama básica ya que de alguna forma ya la había olvidado hasta cierto punto debido a que esto lo vi fue la semana pasada.
Es algo extraño pensar que ya van dos películas seguidas de superhéroes que voy a ver con amigos, me río con ellos de las cosas de la película, salgo del cine y días después no vuelvo a pensar mucho en ello, además de ver en internet la recepción mediocre a lo mejor, agria a lo peor, de estas películas. Y en ambos casos las taquillas no han dado muchos frutos, lo cual creo que es notable con como en esta película así como en Quantumania, el cine no estaba lleno de gente.
Entonces lo que puedo decir de esta película al final es...que es una película. Con más coherencia y (marginalmente) mejor recepción que Quantumania, pero aun así una película, solo con el beneficio de que me reí más por los chistes de la película que por ridiculeces que tenía la misma.
