Напередодні зимових свят колись українські господині мали важливий символічний клопіт - випікання медових пряників. Ними ласували діти, ними обдаровували колядників та щедрівників, які приходили до хати колядувати, їх роздавали хрещеникам, коли ті приносили вечерю хресним батькам.
On the eve of winter holidays, Ukrainian housewives once had an important symbolic task - baking honey gingerbread. Children feasted on them, they were given to carolers and benefactors who came to the house to carol, they were given to godchildren when they brought dinner to their godparents.
Тому пряників робили багато. Та головне, вони мали нести символічне наповнення у вигляді форми, в яку закладалось тісто і випікався, власне, сам пряник. Ці форми вирізблювались майстрами з дерева і вони мали назву "пряничні дошки".

Зазвичай такі дошки купувались на ярмарках, але і сам господар при наявності хисту та інструментів міг вирізати таку дошку для власної родини. Найпопулярнішими були дошки у формі тварин, особливо свійських - півники, баранці, корови, коники.
Usually, such boards were bought at fairs, but the owner himself, if he had the skills and tools, could carve such a board for his own family. The most popular were boards in the shape of animals, especially domestic ones - roosters, lambs, cows, and grasshoppers.
В наш час традиція випікання пряників за допомогою пряничних дошок набирає все більшої популярності. І на додачу до традиційних форм, додаються сучасні. Наприклад, як ця дошка у формі українського військового літака "Су-24".

Такі дошки виготовляє ветеран ЗСУ, який воював з 2014 року за звільнення Донбасу від російських загарбників та сепаратистів. Після звільнення з армії він започаткував власну деревообробну справу з акцентом на українські традиції - меблі, предмети інтер'єру, сувеніри та пряничні дошки.
