І от під час 14 випуску моєї постійної рубрики #uzhhorodsculptures "Маленькі, але вагомі причини приїхати в Ужгород" до мене дійшло, що буде цікаво розповісти з чого, взагалі все почалось в нашому місті. Вірніше розповісти про першу міні-скульптурку, котра живе тут вже 10 років!
And so during the 14th issue of my regular column #uzhhorodsculptures "Small but Weighty Reasons to Visit Uzhhorod" it occurred to me that it will be interesting to tell what, in general, it all started in our city. It is more accurate to tell you about the first mini-sculpture, which has lived here for 10 years!

Meet, today we have a little helper of St. Nicholas with a beautiful and bright history, timed to its establishment.
Хто такий Святий Миколай? / Who is Saint Nicholas?
Згідно із Вікіпедією святий Миколай це реальний персонаж, котрий був римським християнським священником грецького походження. Хоч інформації про нього і залишилось досить мало, проте він являється одним із найшанованіших святих у католицьких, православних і деяких протестантських церквах.
According to Wikipedia, St. Nicholas is a real character who was a Roman Christian priest of Greek descent. Although there is very little information about him, he is one of the most revered saints in the Catholic, Orthodox and some Protestant churches.
Також, цей святий є покровителем дітей, мандрівників, моряків тощо і за звичаєм в багатьох європейских країнах саме він приносить подарунки малюкам на день святого Миколая. У англомовних країнах, зокрема в США, ототожнюється з Сантою Клаусом, який обдаровує дітей на Різдво.
Also, this saint is the patron saint of children, travellers, sailors, etc. and according to custom in many European countries, it is he who brings gifts to children on St. Nicholas Day. In English-speaking countries, particularly in the United States, he is identified with Santa Claus, who presents children for Christmas.
Традиційно cвятий Миколай приносить в ніч з 18 на 19 грудня і залишає їх у дитячих шкарпетках, взутті або під подушкою. І якщо поцікавитись історіями та звичаями інших народів, то можна побачити, що схожим чином приносять подарунки малюкам інші, відомі у країнах заходу, персонажі – наприклад, Сінтерклаас у Нідерландах, Санта-Клаус в Америці чи Батько Різдво у Англії. І, взагалі, багато людей вважають, що всі ці герої є однією людиною, хоча традиції та історії у всіх все-таки різні та неповторні.
Traditionally, St. Nicholas brings on the night of 18 to 19 December and leaves them in children's socks, shoes or under a pillow. And if you look at the stories and customs of other nations, you can see that similar characters bring gifts to children in a similar way, known in Western countries - for example, Sinterklaas in the Netherlands, Santa Claus in America or Father Christmas in England. And, in general, many people believe that all these characters are one person, although the traditions and stories of all still different and unique.
А от хто такий помічник святого Миколая? Дуже просто, це всі ті люди, котрі хочуть допомагати йому в цій прекрасній справі - подарувати щось слухняним дітям та доставити подарунки до того, як вони прокинуться. Саме цим людям присвячена наша сьогоднішня скульптурка.
But who is the helper of St. Nicholas? It's very simple, it's all those people who want to help him with this wonderful cause - to give something to obedient children and deliver gifts before they wake up. Our today's sculpture is dedicated to these people.
Чому скульптура знаходиться в Ужгороді? / Why is the sculpture located in Uzhhorod?
Ще в 1993 році завідувач кафедри туризму УжНУ Федір Шандор був звичайним вчителем, котрий вирішив втілити в реальність ідею своїх учнів. Дітлахи хотіли урізноманітнити святкування Дня Святого Миколая та пошили собі червоні шапочки і вивчили святкові пісні, щоб 19 грудня вперше вийти на вулиці Ужгороду, співати та роздавати всім солодощі.
Back in 1993, the head of the Department of Tourism of Uzhhorod National University Fedor Shandor was an ordinary teacher at the school, who decided to realize the idea of his schoolchildren. The children wanted to diversify the celebration of St. Nicholas Day and sewed red hats and learned holiday songs, to go out on the streets of Uzhgorod for the first time on December 19, sing and distribute sweets to everyone.
Ідея настільки сподобалась учням та організаторам, що було прийнято рішення проводити таку акцію кожного року і поступово розширяти запрошуючи інші школи прийняти участь в заході.
The students and organizers liked the idea so much that it was decided to hold such an event every year and gradually expand, inviting other schools to take part in the event.
І ось вже майже 30 років парад миколайчиків являється традиційним та оригінальним заходом, що символізує початок новорічних свят. На сьогоднішній день в ньому приймають участь тисячі школярів, студентів та дорослих, а на вулицях міста роздаються десятки кілограм солодощів всім перехожим.
And for almost 30 years, the parade of St. Nicholas has been a traditional and original event, symbolizing the beginning of the New Year holidays. Today, thousands of schoolchildren, students and adults take part in it, and tens of kilograms of sweets are distributed to all passers-by on the streets of the city.
До речі, саме під час цього параду запалюють головну ялинку міста та відкривають місцеві святкові ярмарки. Ще одна роль, котру виконує парад - благодійність! Під час святкування проводяться не тільки концерти та конкурси, а і аукціони кошти з яких передаються на важливі соціальні проекти.
By the way, it is during this parade that the garlands of the main Christmas tree of the city are turned on and holiday fairs are opened. Another role played by the parade is charity! During the celebration, not only concerts and competitions are held, but also auctions, the funds from which are transferred to important social projects.
І саме до цих подій було встановлено бронзового помічника, щоб закарбувати всі попередні та майбутні добрі справи послідувачів святого Миколая! Розкажу, поки не забула, якщо будете в Ужгороді та побачите скульптурку обов'язково потріть ніс помічнику та загадайте бажання, воно здійсниться. Звичайно, якщо цілий рік ви були добрими та слухняними 😊
And it was before these events that a bronze helper was installed to engrave all the previous and future good deeds of the followers of St. Nicholas! I'll tell you, I haven't forgotten yet, if you are in Uzhhorod and see the sculpture, be sure to rub your assistant's nose and make a wish, it will come true. Of course, if you have been kind and obedient all year 😊
Яка історія в скульптури? / What is the history of sculpture?
Міні помічника встановили на перилах театральної площі 19 грудня 2010 року. Автором традиційно був Михайло Колодко, а ужгородці прозвали скульптуру Миколайчиком.
Висота скульптури всього 16 сантиметрів, але важить вона аж 12 кілограм!
A mini assistant was installed on the railing of the Poshtova square on December 19, 2010. Mykhailo Kolodko was traditionally the author, and Uzhhorod residents nicknamed the sculpture Mykolaychyk.
The height of the sculpture is only 16 centimetres, but it weighs as much as 12 kilograms!
Не обійшлось і без пригод, так в 2012 році у скульптуру врізався водій, який не впорався з керуванням. Подейкують, саме Миколайчик врятував машину від падіння у річку. А я промовчу, що це взагалі пішохідна зона і водій встиг порушити купу правил 😅
Саме з того дня бере початок історія із міні-скульптурами, котрі розкидані по всьому місту та стали нашою візитівкою 😊
It was not without accidents, so in 2012 a driver who failed to drive crashed into the sculpture. It is rumoured that it was Mykolaychyk who saved the car from falling into the river. And I will keep silent that this is a pedestrian zone in general and the driver managed to break a bunch of rules 😅
It is from that day that the story begins with mini-sculptures, which are scattered throughout the city and have become our business card 😊
