Hola Amigos! Today I would like to tell you about another district of Mexico City. Santa Fe is by far the most modern part of the Mexican metropolis and impresses with an amazing skyline, the largest shopping mall of the country and probably the most beautiful and well-kept park of the city. Santa Fe is also considered to be very safe. My expectations were accordingly high, but in addition to much excitement, my visit was also affected by some disappointments. Just read on if you want to know how I experienced my week in Sante Fe.
Hola Amigos! Heute möchte ich euch wieder von einem Stadtteil von Mexico City berichten. Santa Fe ist der mit Abstand modernste Bereich der mexikanischen Metropole und beeindruckt mit einer imposanten Skyline, der größten Shopping Mall des Landes sowie dem wohl schönsten und gepflegtesten Park der Stadt. Außerdem gilt Santa Fe als sehr sicher. Meine Vorfreude war dementsprechend riesig, doch neben viel Begeisterung, war mein Besuch auch von einigen Enttäuschungen geprägt. Lest einfach weiter, wenn ihr wissen wollt, wie ich meine Woche in Sante Fe erlebt habe.
Santa Fe is located on the far south-western outskirts of Mexico City, so getting there from the city centre can take some time. No less than 20km separate this area from the historic old town. But you also have to go uphill - Santa Fe is located at an altitude of about 2,500m above sea level, which is about 500m higher than most other parts of CDMX. After my arrival, I started my first photo tour and visited the unique park "La Mexicana".
Santa Fe liegt am äußersten südwestlichen Stadtrand von Mexico City und somit kann die Anreise vom Stadtzentrum schon einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen. Nicht weniger als 20km trennen diesen Bereich von der historischen Altstadt. Doch es geht auch bergauf - Santa Fe liegt nämlich auf ca. 2.500m Seehöhe und somit ungefähr 500m höher als die meisten anderen Stadteile von CDMX. Nach meiner Ankunft startete ich gleich die erste Fototour und besuchte den einzigartigen Park "La Mexicana".
I was immediately impressed by the park. It is as spacious as it is clean and well-kept, offers lots of interesting sculptures, cafés and restaurants, artificial ponds, playgrounds for children, an open-air stage, a huge pedestrian bridge and, above all, a fantastic view of the many skyscrapers. Here you can find peace and relaxation, far away from the crowds of the city centre. For the first time since I arrived, I felt really 100% safe and relaxed in Mexico - even in the evening, after sunset.
Der Park hat mich gleich auf Anhieb begeistert. Er ist genauso weitläufig, wie sauber und gepflegt, bietet jede Menge interessanter Skulpturen, Cafés und Restaurants, künstliche angelegte Wasserflächen, Spielplätze für Kinder, eine Freiluftbühne, eine riesige Fußgängerbrücke und vor allem einen traumhaften Blick auf die vielen Wolkenkratzer. Hier findet man Ruhe und Entspannung, fernab von den Menschenmassen des Zentrums. Zum ersten Mal seit meiner Anreise fühlte ich mich in Mexiko wirklich zu 100% sicher und entspannt - auch abends, nach Sonnenuntergang.
Another highlight of Santa Fe is "Centro Santa Fe" - the largest shopping mall in Mexico. Here you can find numerous shops and restaurants of all price ranges on up to six floors, as well as a cinema and even an ice-skating rink. Architecturally not less interesting is the smaller "Garden Mall" with its huge, futuristic light shafts that extend over three underground floors. Unfortunately, I was immediately forbidden to take photos by the security staff - even with my mobile phone. So it was once again a secret mission to shoot a few pics of this unique place for you.
Ein weiteres Highlight von Santa Fe ist das "Centro Santa Fe" - die größte Shopping Mall von Mexiko. Hier findet man auf bis zu sechs Stockwerken neben zahlreichen Shops und Restaurants aller Preisklassen auch ein Kino und sogar einen Eislaufplatz. Architektonisch nicht minder interessant ist die kleinere "Garden Mall" mit ihren riesigen, futuristischen Lichtschächten, die sich über drei unterirdische Stockwerke erstrecken. Leider wurde mir das Fotografieren vom Sicherheitspersonal sofort untersagt - sogar mit dem Handy. Es war also wieder mal eine geheime Mission, heimlich ein paar Fotos dieses einzigartiges Ortes für euch zu schießen.
The Downsides/Die Schattenseiten
As already announced, there are unfortunately also things that I didn't like at all about Santa Fe. First of all, there is the elevated location, which causes constant wind and much colder temperatures than in the rest of the city. Especially in the evenings, you like to grab your winter jacket and warm headgear. But it gets much worse, because Santa Fe is, without exaggeration, a nightmare for pedestrians. While everything looks very compact and easy to walk on the map, in reality the hilly terrain gets in the way. Very often you suddenly find yourself in front of a deep gorge or a high rock face and have no plan about how to get to your desired destination. To me, it almost seemed as if the city planners had simply not taken the mountainous character of this area into consideration.
Wie bereits angekündigt, gibt es leider auch Dinge, die mir an Santa Fe überhaupt nicht gefallen haben. Da wäre zum einen die erhöhte Lage, die für ständigen Wind und um einiges kältere Temperaturen als in den restlichen Teilen der Stadt sorgt. Besonders abends greift man hier gerne zur Winterjacke und warmen Kopfbedeckung. Doch es kommt noch viel schlimmer, denn Santa Fe ist für Fußgänger, ohne Übertreibung, ein einziger Albtraum. Während auf der Karte alles sehr kompakt und einfach zu begehen aussieht, kommt einem in der Realität das hügelige Gelände in die Quere. Sehr oft steht man plötzlich vor einer tiefen Schlucht oder einer hohen Felswand und hat keinen Plan, wie man zum gewünschten Ziel kommt. Auf mich wirkte es fast so, als hätten die Städteplaner den gebirgigen Charakter dieses Bereichs einfach nicht berücksichtigt.
There is also a lot of construction activity. Among other things, the high-speed railway line to Toluca is being built here. Everything seems somehow unfinished and poorly planned. As a pedestrian, I could reach the largest shopping mall of the country only via car parks or even parking garages. Getting from the mall to the park is like an obstacle course. There is a lack of pavements, zebra crossings and footbridges. The park itself is actually only accessible at two entrances at the northern and southern ends. As a pedestrian, you just feel completely neglected.
Daneben gibt es auch viel Bautätigkeit. Unter anderem wird hier die Hochgeschwindigkeits-Bahnstrecke nach Toluca gebaut. Alles wirkt irgendwie unfertig und undurchdacht. Selbst die größte Shopping Mall des Landes konnte ich als Fußgänger teilweise nur über Parkplätze oder sogar Parkgaragen erreichen. Von der Mall zum Park zu gelangen, gleicht einem einzigen Hindernislauf. Es mangelt an Gehsteigen, Zebrastreifen und Fußgängerbrücken. Der Park selbst ist eigentlich nur an zwei Eingängen am nördlichen und südlichen Ende betretbar. Man fühlt sich als Fußgänger einfach völlig im Stich gelassen.
My Conclusion/Mein Fazit
Santa Fe is a must-see and must-experience when visiting Mexico City. The district is so different from all the others that you feel like you are in a completely different city. Even though the cold weather got to me and I was annoyed by the complicated paths I had to walk, I was fascinated by the impressive architecture and especially by one of the most beautiful and interesting city parks I have seen on my travels so far.
Santa Fe muss man unbedingt gesehen und erlebt haben, wenn man Mexico City besucht. Der Stadtteil unterscheidet sich so erheblich von allen restlichen, dass man das Gefühl hat, sich in einer komplett anderen Stadt zu befinden. Auch wenn mir das kalte Wetter zu schaffen machte und ich mich über die komplizierten Wege, die ich zu Fuß ging, ärgerte, war ich doch fasziniert von der beeindruckenden Architektur und vor allem von einem der schönsten und interessantesten Stadtparks, die ich ich bisher auf meinen Reisen gesehen habe.
