Hey guys! Believe it or not, but Mexico City is so huge that there is even a national park within the city limits. On top of that, you can find a convent ruin there, where ghosts of deceased nuns are said to hang out. Sounds exciting, I thought, and so I called a taxi and went to the national park "Desierto de los Leones" to have a closer look at this place.
Hallo Leute! Ob ihr es glaubt oder nicht, aber Mexico City ist so groß, dass sich sogar ein Nationalpark innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen befindet. Noch dazu findet man dort eine Klosterruine, in der sich Geister verstorbener Nonnen herumtreiben sollen. Klingt spannend, dachte ich mir und so rief ich mir ein Taxi und begab mich in den Nationalpark "Desierto de los Leones", um mir selbst ein Bild davon zu machen.
The park is located at about 3,000m above sea level on the south-western outskirts of CDMX and consists mainly of forests. These are popular with city residents for hiking or cycling. The vegetation here is very dense and some of the trees are extremely tall. However, the highlight of the national park is the well-preserved ruins of a convent built in 1606. The entrance fee is only 19 pesos, which is an absolute bargain for what you get.
Der Park liegt auf ca. 3.000m Seehöhe am südwestlichen Stadtrand von CDMX und besteht hauptsächlich aus Wäldern. Diese werden von den Stadtbewohnern gerne zum Wandern oder Radfahren genutzt. Die Vegetation ist hier sehr dicht und die Bäume teilweise extrem hoch. Das Highlight des Nationalparks ist aber die gut erhaltene Ruine eines Klosters, das im Jahre 1606 erbaut wurde. Der Eintritt kostet nur 19 Pesos und ist somit ein absolutes Schnäppchen, für das, was man geboten bekommt.
Even before my visit, I had heard about the creepy atmosphere of the convent and indeed I never felt very comfortable within the cold walls. In fact there is a spooky mood that is difficult to convey through pictures. It is said that you can hear the voices of the deceased nuns here at night. Some visitors even claim to have seen their ghosts with their own eyes. If you are brave enough, you can take part in a guided tour at night, which is very popular among locals as well as tourists.
Schon vor meinem Besuch hörte ich von der gruseligen Atmosphäre des Klosters und tatsächlich fühlt man sich in den kalten Gemäuern nie so richtig wohl. Ganz im Gegenteil, es herrscht teilweise eine gespenstische Stimmung, die sich nur schwer über Bilder vermitteln lässt. Angeblich soll man hier nachts die Stimmen der verstorbenen Nonnen hören können. Einige Besucher wollen ihre Geister sogar mit eigenen Augen gesehen haben. Wer mutig genug ist, kann hier sogar nachts an einer geführten Tour teilnehmen, die sowohl bei Einheimischen, als auch bei Touristen sehr beliebt ist.
Once you have left the convent grounds, the spooky atmosphere quickly turns into the opposite. With the many market stalls and restaurants, as well as the numerous visitors, you easily forget that you are in the middle of a huge forest at 3000m above sea level. The vibe here is really unique - somehow relaxed and cosy, but also lively and hectic. However, I took the opportunity to try some new Mexican food.
Hat man das Klostergelände verlassen, schlägt die gespenstische Atmosphäre schnell ins Gegenteil um. Bei den vielen Marktständen und Restaurants, sowie den zahlreichen Besuchern, vergisst man schnell, dass man sich mitten in einem riesigen Wald auf 3000m Seehöhe befindet. Die Stimmung hier ist wirklich einzigartig - irgendwie entspannt und gemütlich, aber auch quirlig und hektisch. Auf jeden Fall nutzte ich die Gelegenheit, um neue mexikanische Speisen zu probieren.
This time, my menu included a delicious, freshly squeezed orange juice and a spicy soup with chicken, rice, cheese and potatoes called "Caldo Tlalpeño". What I found particularly interesting, however, were the black, or dark grey, quesadillas, which are actually supposed to be blue because they are made from blue corn. I didn't even know that blue corn existed, but it was another amazing culinary experience. The food was really excellent.
Auf meinem Speiseplan stand diesmal neben einem leckeren, frisch gepressten Orangensaft, eine scharfe Suppe mit Hühnerfleisch, Reis, Käse und Kartoffeln names "Caldo Tlalpeño". Besonders interessant fand ich aber die schwarzen, bzw. dunkelgrauen Quesadillas, die eigentlich blau sein sollen, weil sie aus blauem Mais gemacht werden. Ich wusste nicht einmal, dass es blauen Mais überhaupt gibt, aber so war ich wieder um eine kulinarische Erfahrung reicher. Das Essen war wirklich hervorragend.
Desierto de los Leones National Park is certainly not an absolute must-see attraction when visiting the Mexican capital. Nevertheless, or perhaps even exactly for that reason, I enjoyed my stay there very much. You can forget the stress of the metropolis for a few hours and enjoy delicious food in the middle of nature. In addition, the mysterious convent is of course a very special kind of highlight. By the way, during my change of accommodation after the convent visit, I forgot to pack two important things and had to return again to pick them up. That usually never happens to me. The creeps must have left their marks 😉
Der Nationalpark "Desierto de los Leones" gehört mit Sicherheit nicht zum absoluten Pflichtprogramm für den Besuch der mexikansichen Hauptstadt. Trotzdem oder vielleicht sogar gerade deshalb hat mit mein Aufenthalt dort sehr gut gefallen. Hier kann man den Stress der Metropole für ein paar Stunden vergessen und leckeres Essen in der Natur genießen. Zudem bietet das mysteriöse Kloster natürlich ein Highlight der ganz besonderen Art. Bei meinem Unterkunft-Wechsel nach dem Kloster-Besuch habe ich übrigens zwei wichtige Dinge vergessen einzupacken und musste erneut zurückkehren, um diese abzuholen. Das passiert mir sonst nie. Das Gruseln hat wohl Spuren hinterlassen 😉
