In the area known as the “Hurdes” in the north of the province of Cáceres in the autonomous community of Extremadura, there are a series of small towns full of history, as is the case of this visit to Casar de Palomero. On this occasion, I was invited to visit it by a local person who told me about some of the special characteristics of this town. I headed from the highway that connects Cáceres with Salamanca to turn off towards Granadilla and pass the Gabriel y Galán reservoir to first reach the region of Las Hurdes and then Casar de Palomero, which was my destination. The idea was to spend several days in this area, staying overnight in different places to get to know the surroundings and some other neighbouring towns. I must say that getting to know this region is a challenge, as it is quite rugged due to the proximity of the mountains and covers quite a lot of physical space with small country roads, which I love for my taste and way of getting around, due to the way you have to drive and also the beauty of a mountainous and winding landscape. Along the way, there are surprises such as chapels, very small villages, meadows and vegetation with pine trees, chestnut trees, cherry trees and olive trees. Getting lost on purpose in Las Hurdes is easy and it is one of the challenges I had set myself for this excursion.
En la zona de las llamadas “Hurdes” al norte de la provincia de Cáceres en la comunidad autónoma de Extremadura se encuentran una serie de pequeños pueblos llenos de historia como es el caso de esta visita al Casar de Palomero. En esta ocasión fui invitado a conocerlo por una persona de allí que me hablo de algunas de las características especiales que tiene esta villa. Me dirigí desde la autovía que comunica Cáceres con Salamanca para desviarme hacia Granadilla y pasar el embalse de Gabriel y Galán para llegar primeramente a la región de las Hurdes y después al Casar de Palomero que era mi destino. La idea era pasar varios días en esta zona pernoctando en diferentes lugares para ir conociendo todo el entorno y algunas otras localidades vecinas. Deciros que conocer esta región es un reto ya que es bastante agreste por la cercanía de la sierra y abarca bastante espacio físico con pequeñas carreteras comarcales que para mi gusto y forma de moverme me encantan debido a la manera en que hay que conducir y también a la belleza de un paisaje montañoso y serpenteante. Por el camino sorpresas de capillas, poblaciones muy pequeñas, prados y una vegetación con pinos, castaños, cerezos y olivos. Perderse apropósito en las Hurdes es fácil y es uno de los desafíos que me había planteado en esta excursión.
I was told that in ancient times the first settlers of this area lived in caves at the foot of the mountain, forming the first communities, dating back to Neolithic times. I began the tour through the picturesque and characteristic streets of these regions of northern Cáceres with architectural features unique to this region. A charming town, very well maintained and which preserved very old parts currently under restoration, giving it that rustic touch that makes Casar de Palomero a jewel of a town. With a rural economy, these towns are losing population due to the lack of births and migration to larger urban centers. Empty Spain is becoming part of these populations since life in them has specific characteristics of isolation that many people love and others find more difficult.
Me hablaron de que en la antigüedad los primeros pobladores de esta zona vivían en las cuevas que al pie de la montaña fueron formando las primeras comunidades y que se remontaban al tiempo de neolítico. Empecé el recorrido por las pintorescas y características calles de estas regiones del norte de Cáceres con características arquitectónicas únicas de esta región. Un pueblo encantador , muy bien cuidado y que conservaba partes muy antiguas actualmente en restauración que le daban ese punto rustico que convierte al Casar de Palomero en una joya de pueblo. Con una economía rural estos pueblos van perdiendo población debido a la falta de natalidad y a una migración a núcleos urbanos más grandes, la España vaciada va siendo parte de estas poblaciones ya que la vida en ellas tiene unas características de aislamiento concretas que a muchas personas les encanta y a otras les resulta más difícil.
Once inside the heart of the town and its oldest core, the streets and passages became more rustic, preserving the essence of a town that preserves part of its legacy in them. I noticed that some houses in this part of the town were quite deteriorated with use and the passage of time, but that there were many restoration projects for them. For a moment I thought that living in a place like this must be a feeling of peace and tranquility that can be enjoyed in very few places and that it would be a good place to have a general camp, so I call it the place where I wouldn't mind locating a residence and enjoying fixing up some of these old houses to live in.
Ya metido en el corazón y su núcleo más antiguo los pasadizos y calles se volvían mas rusticas conservando la esencia de un pueblo que guarda parte de su legado en ellas. Observe que algunas casas en esta parte de la villa estaban bastante deterioradas con uso y paso de los años pero que había muchos proyectos de restauración de las mismas. Por un momento pensé que vivir en un lugar así debe ser una sensación de paz y tranquilidad que en muy pocos sitios se puede disfrutar y que sería un buen lugar para tener un campamento general, le llamo así al lugar donde no me importaría ubicar una residencia y disfrutar arreglando alguna de estas viejas casas para vivir.
I had the opportunity to enter one of these old houses and see what the lifestyle would be like, from the bedrooms to the kitchen or cellar where food and drinks could be stored. The preservation of the rustic would not be at odds with modernization and my thoughts about interior decoration took off when I saw these houses from the inside. I think it would be a simple way of life, far from the noise and hustle and bustle of the city and I do not rule it out as a future personal project.
Tuve la oportunidad de entrar en uno de estos viejos casones y ver como seria el modo de vida, desde los dormitorios cocina o bodega donde guardar alimentos y bebidas. La conservación de lo rustico no estaría reñida con las modernización y mis pensamientos de decoración interior se dispararon al ver estas casas por dentro. Creo que sería un modo de vida sencillo y lejos del ruido y vorágine de la ciudad y no lo descarto como futuro proyecto personal.
When I finished, I went to see the two churches in Casar de Palomero, where I had been told about some very special characteristics. The church of the blessed cross and a small chapel, which really surprised me, since on its walls and main front there were crosses from all over the world, giving it a special relevance. I like to visit these places for their architecture and also because they breathe an atmosphere of faith in the people, which, personally and for me, has nothing to do with the religious aspect. I think that spirituality is one thing and religions are something else, without wanting to enter into controversy about it and respecting the personal thoughts of each person.
Al terminar me fui a ver las dos iglesias del Casar de Palomero donde me habían hablado de unas características muy especiales. Su iglesia de la cruz bendita y una pequeña capilla que fue la que me sorprendió realmente ya que en sus paredes y frente principal se hallaban cruces venidas de todos los lugares del mundo dándole a esta una especial relevancia. Me gusta visitar estos lugares por su arquitectura y también porque en ellos se respira un ambiente de fe de las personas que en lo personal y para mi nada tiene que ver con el aspecto religioso. Pienso que la espiritualidad es una cosa y las religiones otra distinta sin ánimo de entrar en controversia sobre ello y respetando el pensamiento personal de cada uno.
El Casar de Palomero and the region of Las Hurdes do not leave visitors indifferent and are a place to lose yourself in nature and the rustic life of this region of the country.
