A trip to the center of the country took me to the Castilian city of Toledo. Located in a high area and surrounded by the Tagus River, one of the main rivers in the country, which in this way forks and forms a meander. When I reached the river area and after crossing it by some of its many bridges, the climb to the city mound seemed elevated with steep slopes and inclines. The city of Toledo seems to have been built in a very strategic way for its defense since accessing it coming from the plains is difficult. I was surprised when I arrived by the breadth and how it was noticeable that the areas, or neighborhoods, were clearly delimited and dispersed. This name of Toledo has invited other cities in the world to be called that way and it can also be found in Uruguay, Colombia, the Philippines, Portugal, Belize, Brazil, Canada and in some North American states, twinning with all of them. There are also some towns in other provinces of Spain with this name. Walking through the streets of Toledo is like being surrounded by the different cultures that have shaped it, and you can see its character as a “city of three cultures” since Arabs, Jews and Christians lived here for a long time.
Un recorrido hacia el centro del país me llevo a la ciudad castellana de Toledo. Situada en una zona alta y rodeada por el río Tajo, uno de los ríos principales del país, que en esta forma bifurca y forma un meandro. Cuando llegue a la zona del rio y después de atravesarlo por algunos de sus múltiples puentes, la subida hasta el montículo de la ciudad parecía elevada con rampas y cuestas pronunciadas. La ciudad de Toledo parece que había sido construida de una manera muy estratégica para su defensa ya que acceder a ella viniendo desde los llanos tiene su dificultad. Me sorprendió al llegar la amplitud y como se notaba que las zonas, o barrios, estaban claramente delimitados y dispersos. Este nombre de Toledo ha invitado a llamarse así a otras ciudades del mundo y se puede encontrar también en Uruguay, Colombia, Filipinas, Portugal, Belice, Brasil, Canadá y en algunos estados norteamericanos hermanándose con todas ellas. También hay alguna localidad en otras provincias de España con este nombre. Recorrer las calles de Toledo es sentirse entre diferentes culturas que la han formado y se nota su carácter de “ciudad de las tres culturas” ya que durante mucho tiempo vivieron fusionados árabes, judíos y cristianos en ella.
I entered the city through its newest part, through the area of the university campus of Castilla La Mancha, to gradually fade into the old atmosphere of the historic part of the town. I could guess in the distance from the toponymy of the city one of the emblematic buildings that was one of my objectives, the Royal Alcazar of Toledo. Through Castilian streets of very picturesque sand and ochre colors I went up some small slopes until I reached the base of the Alcazar. Its grandeur, its rectangular shape and its towers on the four corners covered with that beautiful slate gave it a strong appearance and an impregnable fortress. Reading a code at its entrance I was informed that it had been used and renovated on several occasions by different cultures. At first it was built as a Roman palace, modified in the late Middle Ages and subdued and rebuilt during the Muslim period. Later it was Christianized and recently its most notable role has been as a bastion of resistance in the Spanish Civil War, with some very good stories about this period.
Me introduje por la ciudad por su parte más nueva, por la zona del campus universitario de Castilla La Mancha, para ir de a poco diluyéndome en el ambiente antiguo de la parte histórica de la villa. Puede adivinar en la distancia por la toponimia de la ciudad uno de los edificios emblemáticos que era uno de mis objetivos, el Real Alcázar de Toledo. Por calles castellanas de colores arena y ocres muy pintorescas fui subiendo unas pequeñas cuestas hasta llegar a la base del Alcázar. Su grandeza, su forma rectangular y sus torres en las cuatro esquinas cubiertas con esa bonita pizarra le daban un aspecto recio y de fortaleza inexpugnable. Le yendo un código en su entrada me informe que había sido utilizado y reformado en varias ocasiones por diferentes culturas. En un principio fue construido como palacio romano, modificado en la baja edad media y sometido y reconstruido por el periodo musulmán. Tiempo más tarde cristianizado y recientemente lo más notorio ha sido como bastión de resistencia en la guerra civil española habiendo muy buena historias sobre este periodo.
After this first important contact with this architectural gem, I headed towards the city's Gothic cathedral. As I approached it, it seemed imposing and those towers rose up as if they were touching the sky. In this place, I met one of the cathedral workers who told me that they were studying the possibility of one of its blocks being rebuilt for another cult in the Muslim period and then rebuilt again as a Christian basilica by the reconquest. The bell tower, the base, the intricate stonework and the size of the cathedral left me observing it and walking through it without trying to miss a detail. At times I seemed to be transported to another space and time and inside I felt a sense of peace and contemplation although the place imposed respect for its size. The person with whom I was speaking at the beginning also told me that when I finished I should go to the Jesuit church, since its interior was very striking. After finishing my visit to the cathedral I went to this beautiful church and took some pictures of its interior.
Después de este primer contacto importante con esta joya arquitectónica me encamine hacia la catedral gótica de la ciudad. Cuando me iba acercando a ella me parecía imponente y esas torres se alzaban pareciendo tocar el cielo. En este lugar conocí a uno de los trabajadores de la catedral que me comentaron se estudiaba la posibilidad de que uno de sus bloques fuera reconstruido para otro culto en el periodo musulmán y después nuevamente reconstruida como basílica cristiana por la reconquista. La torre de las campanas, la base la intrincada labor en la piedra y la amplitud de la catedral me dejaban observándola y recorriéndola sin tratar de perder detalle. Por momentos me parecía trasladado a otro espacio y tiempo y en su interior sentí una sensación de paz y recogimiento aunque el sitio imponía respeto por su tamaño. La persona con la que estuve hablando en un principio me indico también que al terminar me acercara a la iglesia de los Jesuitas que su interior era muy llamativo. Al acabar mi visita a la catedral me acerque hasta esta preciosa iglesia y tome algunas imágenes de su interior.

The visit to the city of Toledo took me to a bell tower where I could see the whole city from this tower viewpoint. It was here that I was able to understand from above the topography of the city and how it extended on a hill on the banks of the river. Then I walked around the street and was able to enjoy an excellent meal in the restaurants in the area. In this area there were also many shops and businesses, the most notable being the Toledo steel from which many of the most prestigious swords in this country were made. The history and literature of the city is a great legacy that the city and the province of Toledo contribute to culture and is the heritage of all of us.
La visita a la ciudad de Toledo me llevo hasta un campanario donde pude observar toda la ciudad desde este mirador de la torre. Fue aquí donde pude comprender desde arriba la topografía de la ciudad y como se extendía en una loma en los márgenes del rio. Luego recorrí calle y pude disfrutar de una excelente comida en los restaurantes de la zona. En esta zona también había muchos comercios y negocios siendo lo más destacable el acero toledano del cual se fabricaron muchas de las espadas más prestigiosas de este país. La historia y la literatura de la ciudad es un gran legado que la ciudad y la provincia de Toledo aportan a la cultura y es patrimonio de todos nosotros.
