Hello friends!!
Yesterday we had a great day, and it is becoming a family tradition. Every year, since we moved here to California, we go strawberry picking in the spring. This is not a very common activity in Brazil, as you don't see a lot of these pick your own fruits places, specially in a big city like I used to live. So on our first year here we saw a place near by that had strawberry picking and we thought it would be fun to go with the kids. My wife decided to search for a place where the strawberries were organic, and that's how we found Stehly Farms Organics. They are located in Valley Center, about an hour driving from San Diego, those other places nearby that we saw were not organic, and it is 100% worth the drive! We went there on our first year here, and we kept going back every year. Their strawberry fields are not open at all times like the commercial ones, they are a real farm and the strawberry picking is a one day event. They don't announce the date in advance, only a week or two before, so you need to keep looking at their website or Instagram profile. They usually do a couple of events, 2-3 weeks a part, every spring.

Ontem nós tivemos um dia super divertido, que esta virando uma tradição da nossa familia. Todos os anos, desde que nos mudamos para a California, nós vamos colher morangos na primavera. Esta não é uma atividade muito comum no Brasil, eu não costumava ver nenhum lugar como esses onde voce pode ir colher frutas, especialmente numa grande cidade como eu costumava viver (RJ). Então, no nosso primeiro ano aqui, nós vimos um lugar onde voce pode ir colher morangos e pensamos que essa seria uma atividade muito legal para ir com as crianças. Minha esposa decidiu procurar por algum lugar onde os morangos fossem organicos, e assim encontramos a Stehly Farms Organics. Eles estão localizados em Valley Center, a mais ou menos uma hora de carro de San Diego, os outros lugares próximos que encontramos não eram organicos, e a distancia compensa 100%. Nós fomos lá no nosso primeiro ano aqui, e sempre voltamos todos os anos. Os campos de morangos não ficam sempre abertos como alguns lugares comerciais, eles são uma fazenda de verdade e a colheita de morango é um evento de um dia só. Eles não anunciam a data antecipadamente, somente uma ou duas semanas antes, então temos que ficar de olho no website ou no perfil do instragram deles. Eles costumam fazer uns dois eventos, separados por 2 ou 3 semanas, por primavera.

At the entrance we have to pay a fee per person, and you get one box. You can buy extra boxes too. Let's go pick some strawberries!!

We got there later in the afternoon this time and all the fields were already open. They open the fields in parts during the day, so that no matter what time you arrive, you will be able to find good fruits.

Desta vez nós chegamos lá no meio da tarde e todos os campos ja estavam abertos. Eles abrem os campos aos poucos e em partes durante o dia, para que tenham frutas disponíveis para todos os visitantes, não importa a hora que voce chegue.

The fruits are amazing, I think these are the best strawberries I ever had. They are extremely sweet! I think I heard the owner of the farm saying once that this type of strawberries are not very commercial, as they tend to rotten quickly, so they have to be eaten not too long after they are picked. But they are big and sweet, and the best part of it all is eating them right there in the field!! Now let's check the other activities they have there.

As frutas são espetaculares, eu acho que são os melhores morangos que ja comi na minha vida. Eles são extremamente doces!! Eu acho que ja ouvi o dono da fazenda comentando que esse tipo de morango não é muito comercial, pois eles apodrecem com rapidez, então eles devem ser consumidos pouco tempo depois de serem colhidos. Mas eles são enormes e muito doces, e a melhor parte de tudo isso é poder comer eles lá na hora, no meio do campo!! Agora vamos ver as outras atividades que tem por la.

They have a playground and an old fire truck for the kids to play. It's super fun and the kids love it!!

Eles tem um playground e um antigo caminhão de bombeiros para as crianças brincarem. É muito divertido e as crianças adoram.

They also have a small petting zoo.

They have also a tractor tour, where they take you around the farm showing everything they grow there. If you look at the picture, one of the owners is standing on the back of the truck cart and he personally shows everyone the farm. It's a family owned business and you can see the entire family working in the event.

Eles tem também uma excursão de trator pela fazenda, onde eles te levam para ver tudo o que eles plantam lá. Se voce prestar atenção na foto, um dos donos da fazenda esta de pé na parte de tras do carro e ele leva todos pessoalmente explicando o que eles fazem lá. A fazenda é um negocio de familia, e vejo que a familia toda trabalha no evento.

And to finish the day, we just sat and enjoyed some food and drinks. They have a picnic area and they offer some flat bread pizza, tacos, smoothies, ice cream, juices and kombucha. They also have a small farmers market where they sell the things they grow there like different types of lettuce, kale, broccoli, asparagus, celery, oranges, avocados, and so many other tasty things. We had a lot of fun and we took home a lot of good food.

E para terminar o dia, nós sentamos para comer e beber. Eles tem uma area de picnic e oferecem pizza, tacos, vitaminas, sorvetes, sucos, e kombucha. Eles também tem um pequeno mercadinho onde oferecem as coisas que eles cultivam lá como varios tipos de alface, couve, brocolis, aspargus, aipo, laranjas, abacates e muitas outras coisas. Nós nos divertimos muito e ainda levamos coisas gostosas para casa.
