This time the publication of the series "Wonders of the Hicacos Peninsula" will be deluxe. We will be visiting nothing more and nothing less than the Xanadu Mansion (or Casa Dupont). Its name was given by its owner in honor of the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who wrote a poem inspired by the legendary Mongolian warrior Kubla Khan, first emperor of the Yuan dynasty who had as the capital of his empire a city of the same name.
Its owner, the French-American magnate Ir茅ne茅 du Pont Nemours, commissioned the design and project to the Cuban architectural firm "Govantes y Cabarrocas". Its construction was executed by the company Frederick Snare Corporation and completed in 1930. Precious woods from eastern Cuba and marble from the best quarries on the island, as well as from Spain and Italy, were used in its construction. With almost a century of existence, the beauty of the wood used in its staircases with turned columns, the ceilings and some decorative elements still show its elegance and magnificence.
Being Mr. Du Pont the owner at that time of the largest extension of this peninsula, the choice of the place to build his house was meticulous. The crags of San Bernardino, the highest point of this territory, were the chosen site. Moreover, according to many connoisseurs, this was the best stretch of the beach. The sound of the sea on this cliff is unique, there is no other similar in the whole peninsula, a plus to place here your house of rest.
The Mansion has 4 floors, terraces, balconies, multiple rooms with adjoining bathrooms, a wine cellar, among other spaces. Today it is used as a luxury hotel and access is forbidden for people who are not staying there. I was only able to enter up to the reception and take some pictures of the main hall and some details that I could reach with my lens. According to the receptionist, the elevator that is installed is the original one of the house and is still in operation. As a curious fact, this building has the largest private organ in Latin America at that time. Installed in the basement, its sound box with hundreds of metal and wood pipes carried the music to all levels of the house. Unlike the elevator, sadly this one no longer works 馃様.
To complement his retreat, the wealthy owner had a 9-hole golf course built on his property. It was later expanded to 18, and is today the only 18-hole golf course in the country that meets international standards. Next to the luxurious hotel, the Club House of the Varadero Golf Club is also located on this property. So I don't think I could stay in any of its luxurious rooms, first because they are expensive and second because I don't have the slightest idea of playing golf 馃き.
I walked around. I photographed for you the exterior of this impressive property. I went up to one of the terraces on the first floor, by the way its woodwork is somewhat deteriorated and neglected, but the views are spectacular. The feeling from the height of the cliff is impressive, the breeze laden with saltpeter, the sound of the sea breaking against the rocks...is something indescribable and certainly a luxury you can not miss.

Esta vez la publicaci贸n de la serie "Maravillas de la pen铆nsula de Hicacos" ser谩 de lujo. Estaremos visitando nada m谩s y nada menos que la Mansi贸n Xanad煤 (o Casa Dupont). Su nombre le fue dado por su propietario en honor al poeta ingl茅s Samuel Taylor Coleridge, que escribi贸 un poema inspirado en el legendario guerrero mongol Kubla Khan, primer emperador de la dinast铆a Yuan quien ten铆a como capital de su imperio una ciudad de igual nombre.
Su titular, el magnate franco-americano Ir茅ne茅 du Pont Nemours, encarg贸 el dise帽o y proyecto a estudio de arquitectura cubano "Govantes y Cabarrocas". Su construcci贸n fue ejecutada por la compa帽铆a Frederick Snare Corporation y culminada en 1930. En su edificaci贸n se utilizaron maderas preciosas provenientes del oriente de Cuba y m谩rmoles de las mejores canteras de la Isla y tambi茅n de Espa帽a e Italia. Con casi un siglo de existencia la belleza de las maderas empleadas en sus escaleras con columnas torneada, los techos y algunos elementos decorativos siguen mostrando su elegancia y fastuosidad.
Siendo el Sr. Du Pont due帽o en aquel entonces de la mayor extensi贸n de esta pen铆nsula, la elecci贸n del lugar para edificar su vivienda fue minuciosa. Fueron las pe帽as de San Bernardino, el punto m谩s elevado de este territorio, el sitio escogido. Adem谩s, seg煤n muchos conocedores, era este el mejor tramo de la playa. El sonido del mar en este acantilado es 煤nico, no hay otro semejante en toda la pen铆nsula, un plus para posicionar aqu铆 su vivienda de descanso.
La Mansi贸n posee 4 pisos, terrazas, balcones, m煤ltiples habitaciones con ba帽os contiguos, una cava, entre otros espacios. Hoy es utilizada como hotel de lujo y el acceso est谩 prohibido para personas que no est茅n hospedadas. Solo pude entrar hasta la recepci贸n y tomar algunas fotos del sal贸n principal y de algunos detalles que alcanc茅 con mi lente. Seg煤n la recepcionista el ascensor que est谩 instalado es el original de la casa y a煤n se mantiene en funcionamiento. C贸mo dato curioso, este inmueble posee el 贸rgano privado m谩s grande de Am茅rica Latina de aquella 茅poca. Instalado en el s贸tano, su caja de resonancia con cientos de tubos de metal y madera llevaba la musica a todos los niveles de la casa. A diferencia del ascensor, tristemente este ya no funciona 馃様.
Para complementar su lugar de retiro, el adinerado propietario mand贸 a construir en sus predios, un campo de golf de 9 hoyos. Posteriormente se ampli贸 a 18, siendo hoy el 煤nico campo de golf de 18 hoyos del pa铆s que cumple con los est谩ndares internacionales. Junto al lujoso hotel tambi茅n en este inmueble radica la Casa Club del Club de Golf de Varadero. As铆 que no creo que pueda hospedarme en alguna de sus lujosas habitaciones, primero por caras y segundo porque no tengo ni la m谩s m铆nima idea de jugar golf 馃き.
Camin茅 por los alrededores. Fotografi茅 para ustedes el exterior de este impresionante inmueble. Sub铆 a una de las terrazas de la planta baja, por cierto sus maderas est谩n algo deterioradas y descuidadas, pero las vistas son espectaculares. La sensaci贸n desde la altura del acantilado es impresionante, la brisa cargada de salitre, el sonido del mar rompiendo contra las rocas...es algo indescriptible y sin duda alguna un lujo que no pueden perderse.
