Bush Fires On The Western Outskirts Of Karnobat, Bulgaria

Greetings, Fellow Wildfire Spotters And Other Captain Planet Fans!

Coming in with a report on a bush fire that I witnessed a couple of days ago, just outside town. Fortunately, the winds were blowing from the Black Sea to the East and chasing the flames westwards, away from the urbanized area.

A Firefighter (bottom right) preparing his strategy to limit the spread of the fire front in that direction.

A wider view of the picture, still taken through a zoom lens, shows that the spread was not too shabby to begin with. And the flames moved quite fast cross a kilometer or two of grassy lands. One minute they are up the hill where a couple of relatively new wind turbines and a relatively old complex of TV and radio towers stand...

... down and in a northern direction towards the main road just exiting the town along a 350-400 kilometres-long stretch from the sea port of Burgas to the capital city of Sofia.

That's where the firefighters were putting the flames down, seemingly successfully, by the time that I had to leave the scene.

I wonder how long would it take for the couple of wind turbines to compensate for the carbon emissions that were released near them in a matter of minutes. I would say...more than decades. Bad results get achieved really fast, sometimes.

I don't know how it all started, I only know I heard a warning about high chances of exactly that type of events...just hours earlier on the radio.

It happened near the poorest part of town. A lot of trash gets dumped all around the area, against all rules and good sense of environment preservation. It's only when **** hits the fan that people get into action.

To their credit, local denizens did rush as volunteers to help and localize the flames.

A couple of things that come to mind in such situations...

You should know about the risks and dangers of winds changing directions, smoke poisoning your lungs even further away from the flaming action, etc.

And...even a piece of glass thrown away in the grass can start a devastating fire when dry season comes. Not only on film.

Peace and Calm in the Eye of the ****storm!

Yours,

Manol
