When we were planning our trip, we read a lot about this region and looked at photographs. And, of course, we wanted to visit each of these cities, but we visited not all of them, just the most beautiful ones.
Speaking about the city of Roussillon, foremost, it should not be confused with the city of Languedoc-Roussillon, which is located next door in the neighboring department and has a double name, one of which coincides with our city. It always amuses me, all these identical complex names, where only one word can differ. But we have already had so much confusion with them. So, be careful here.
But let’s return to our colorful town of Roussillon through the streets to which I want to take you. There is a fairly large parking lot at the entrance to the city, so there you can leave your car. It must be said that during our visit the parking lot was completely full. But there was still a place.
So why, out of a large selection of cities that are neighboring the city of Bonnieux, did we definitely decide to visit this particular town? It's all about its colorful houses and ocher quarries that are located here. Ocher is clay with admixtures of iron oxide. Paint is obtained from ocher. After all, it is Roussillon that is called the local Colorado due to its similarity to the American canyon of the same name. Although, the scale is not at all the same, but despite this, Roussillon is still worth our attention.
The famous ocher quarries, which can be visited for a fee and which I will definitely talk about separately in future reviews. It was here that stones and clay were previously mined for construction, as well as ocher, which served as paint for houses with a rich palette from purple to pink. Now the quarry is no longer working, and it has been made a tourist attraction, since the authorities decided to preserve the natural resource, and secondly, natural paint was eventually forced out of the market by cheaper chemical ones. The quarry was closed in 1930. Therefore, now we can only admire nature and the old colorful houses, which are many years old, since this is a medieval city.

Here you will not see gray stone houses, which are still more reminiscent of the Middle Ages, but a very sunny and bright city of all shades of ocher awaits you.

This is a very popular tourist city among Europeans, and local residents make money from tourism.
In the town itself there are a lot of interesting shops where you can buy various exclusive handmade items.
The city of Roussillon itself is very nice and walking around it is a pleasure. We were happy not only about the city, but also about the weather, which was sunny, but it is clear that in the stuffiness under the scorching sun, such a huge number of cities cannot be reviewed in a day.
And I invite you to take a little break and walk along these ancient colorful streets with us and enjoy the beauty that I captured in the photographs.
Like almost all cities in this region and beyond, the medieval city of Roussillon is located on a mountain. And to see the most important sights, you need to climb to the top of this mountain. This is what we are gradually doing. And periodically we get very beautiful views of the local nature and vineyards from the mountains.
But this wonderful painted door, it seems to me, is already a kind of calling card for this city, since no matter how much I looked at photographs of these places, I came across a photograph with this image everywhere.
Where else can you get such colorful and rich colors of houses? And very cute shops with everyday items.
Walking around this city is truly a pleasure, we forgot about our fatigue and that before this city we had already been to three cities and that another one awaited us and the road to the hotel. We simply enjoyed the views.
Strictly speaking, there are no attractions such as such in Roussillon. All Internet articles about the city mention only the Ocher Quarries and Provencal-style houses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. But nevertheless, the city is of genuine interest. Stone was quarried from the quarries around the city, and the dust was used to color the plaster. The material produced in Roussillon was exported even to the Roman Empire, but the city did not forget about itself. Its houses are painted in all possible shades of red, brown, orange, etc.
Then we wind through narrow streets and pass an unusual bell tower. Because of the mistral winds - strong, dry and cold winds, the roofs of the bell towers in Provence are made open - there are no walls around the bells, only gratings.
If a bell tower is found, it means there is a temple nearby. And indeed, around the corner we see the Church of St. Michael or Saint-Michel, the facade of which dates back to the 17th century. The interior of the church is quite modest, the walls are made of light stone, a crucifix hangs on one of the walls, and there are several religious paintings and statues.
From the church we moved to a luxurious observation deck. After the lookout, we headed back and stopped at the drinking fountain. May the person who invented it be happy, we thought as we filled up with water and refreshed our faces.
By the way, the road to our car runs along the Ocher Quarry, but the views are still not the same as those directly inside. Therefore, I definitely recommend that those who are passing through Roussillon visit the Quarry; its views are worth the entire walk around the city.
Most of the people you meet are tourists. Roussillon is a fairly popular destination despite its small size.
This is exactly the kind of Provence I always imagined, even before I came here for the first time. Small colorful houses, narrow streets, shabby old walls and stone-paved streets.
