Alishan Forest Railway

The Alishan Forest Railway, nestled in the heart of Taiwan, is a historic narrow-gauge railway that winds through the breathtaking Alishan Mountain Range. Originally constructed during the Japanese colonial era in the early 20th century, this railway was designed not only for transportation but also to facilitate the logging industry in the lush, ancient forests of Alishan.

Its significance extends beyond mere transportation, as the Alishan Forest Railway has been recognized and honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation is a testament to its cultural and historical importance, preserving a vital piece of Taiwan's heritage for generations to come. The railway stands as a living relic, allowing visitors to journey back in time while reveling in the awe-inspiring beauty of the surrounding natural landscape.

Alishan offers visitors a serene escape into lush greenery and a window into Taiwan's deep-rooted traditions.

Sunrise Train Ride

I was really, really excited about this trip. I was so excited that I decided to stay an extra day in Alishan just to catch the first train at 4 AM. It was early in the morning, but I didn't mind because I couldn't wait to go to Zhushan. I heard it's the perfect spot to see the sunrise, and I didn't want to miss it for anything in the world. 😁

The Alishan Forest Railway is a picturesque train journey spanning 71 kilometers, linking Chiayi County to Alishan. This railway boasts a total of 49 stations along the way. Along the route, trains pass through 47 tunnels and traverse over 72 bridges, showcasing the diverse subtropical, temperate, and alpine environments of the region.

However, I ride a bus from Chiayi County instead of riding the train to give myself the convenience of exploring other parts of Alishan. And therefore I ride the train from Alishan Station to Duigaoyue Station. From there, I had a short walk of a kilometer up the mountain of Zhushan to witness the sunrise.

I woke up around 3:30 AM to walk from my hotel going to the train station. To my surprise, there is already a bunch of people waiting for the train to arrive! I wasn't expecting this as it was not a peak season. So I waited in a queue for the train to arrive.

My heart was rushing when I saw the train light revealing its arrival from a distance. So, I quickly clicked my action cam shutter to record its arrival coz I didn't wanna miss to immortalizing this experience of mine. Watch the video above to experience the arrival of the train. Listen closely as the train sounds its horn, announcing its arrival.

I really like the color of the train as it creates a contrast with the darkness and the forest itself during the day. Meanwhile, it blends naturally with the wooden design of the station.

Shortly after the train arrived, the passengers were allowed to board. I was fortunate to secure a seat, as the train was so full that some passengers had to stand for about an hour during the ride. As you can see in the picture below, most passengers are stealing a nap during the journey, and that includes me!

I quickly took a photo before getting some much-needed rest because when we arrived, we'd have to walk for a kilometer to reach the sunrise viewing platform.

In Taiwan, you'll be glad to find that almost everywhere you go, including the mountains, will have toilets. Meanwhile, starting from Duigaoyue Station this sign tells me that I had to walk for 1160m to reach the Zhushan Viewing Platform. And since the train was full of passengers, the walkway became a looong line of walkers. But I don't mind, it is part of the journey! And nothing beats my excitement!

When we arrived at the viewing platform I was so happy that there are stores here that sell breakfast and hot coffee. It was very cold at around 10C, so I made sure to get a breakfast meal, a hot americano, and sweet potato, to enjoy while viewing the sunrise.

Alishan is up high, so it's usually cool and nice all year round. In summer, it's comfortably warm, around 20-25°C (68-77°F). But in winter, it can get pretty cold, around 5-10°C (41-50°F). Alishan often gets misty, which makes it feel even more magical. When you go, make sure to wear layers because the weather can change quickly.

Sunrise Viewing

Now, the sun is rising, and a man standing on a chair is explaining the features of the mountain range in front of us. It's quite crowded, and I don't understand what he's saying. So, I chose to stay behind the crowd where I can sit, enjoy my breakfast, and still have the mesmerizing view of the sunrise.

The Incredible View of Forest Railway

Around 7:00 AM, everyone starts to slowly make their way back to the train station to catch the last train heading to Alishan Station. Yes, you read it correctly. I'm not sure why the last train is so early. It might be because most people are here just for the sunrise.

Like everyone else, I also headed back to the station after enjoying the sunrise and my breakfast. But this time, I chose to stand while riding the train to give myself more space and different angles to view the forest.

It was my first time riding a train through a forest with huge, untouched trees. The sight of these immense trees was incredible, and I couldn't help but be amazed by the wild beauty passing by the train windows.

The view is just perfect. The train winds its way through the forest like a snake, the misty mood of the surroundings, and the giant trees block the sunlight, creating an illusion of blinking light.

This place simply proves itself to be on the list of UNESCO World Heritage List. 👏
