TravelThursday - Marowijne river, Suriname

Greetings travelers!

As part of the #HiveBloPoMo I started blogging about a place I've visited during my travels! So on Thursday I take you on a throwback trip! This one is recent though as I recently got to visit Suriname again!

It's been a while since my last post and a lot has changed... But I still love photography and I still love traveling so this time we're visiting the Marowijne River... Well technically, were visiting an island in the river! Plot Twist!

A little background

The Marowijne river serves as the border between Suriname and French Guiana.
It's a long river but pretty easy to cross. There a lot of traffic back and forth between the two countries, mainly between Albina (Suriname side) and St Laurent (French Guiana side).
It goes deeper than just crossing ofcourse; there is a whole split community with family and friends living on both sides; a mix between languages with French and Surinamese mixing; but also economics/business.

This isn't a my first time here and you can read more about my visit to Galibi here:

After a 2 hour trip from Paramaribo to Albina our trip continued by boat.

Boattrippin!

After about half an our on the river we reached the island. It's literally in the middle of the river.

Interesting side note:

Since French Guiana is considered an overseas 'department' of France. This is one of those weird cartographical (or political?) situations where you have South America neighboring Europe... 🥸

The river flows towards the Atlantic Ocean...
On the left you have Galibi (or Langamankondre) which you may or may not have seen in previous posts... and on the right you have France 🥸...

Interesting side note nr 2:
This whole area is prime sea turtle nesting ground.. I remember crossing the river and being lucky enough to see a few giant sea turtles laying and burying their eggs when I was a kid...

But back to the island...

In high season (read before/after Corona times) you can stay in a cabin and enjoy watersport activities... Sailing, kayaking, windsurfing on the river...
But for now, it was a very back to the basics trip... And that's actually how I like it 😀😀😀.

Cabin for the weekend!

Kitchen, bathroom/shower, a roof (oh and solar power!) ... And enough space for our hammocks 👌🏾.
Okay there were also rooms and beds but who needs all that 😂.

And the kitchen was a life saver!
It's not quite #Foodfriday worthy but we survived.

Early the next morning!

If you need to get me up early in the morning, there are few things you can say.. And since we're keeping it rated PG 13 here, you can safely say "drone shots" haha low and behold... I'm up!

The other thing was "We're going to Disney World", but I'm not sure that works anymore 🤷🏾‍♂️😂.

On a serious note, getting up early was worth it!

Sunrise over France...

The island is filled with wildlife..
Great place if nature is your thing.. But also great for photography, meditation, or getting away from... people 🤷🏾‍♂️🤣...

These are my kinda trips! Nature, photography and enough space to roam and explore. Simple but satisfying...

That's it for me today... Feel free to connect in the comments. Or if you have any questions let me know..

Cheers,

@Gvkanten
