Last summer, during the holidays, I decided to take @stea90 and my niece Paola on a nice trip to the Neptune's Caves, I knew they would be amazed by how much beauty. You could decide to arrive by boat or on foot via the stairs. I don't like simple things in life, so in the end it was decided to take the stairs.
On the morning of the trip we left mid-morning, we had a two-hour drive to get there, eat something, and be there by 2 pm…
Arrived at the place, we were well excited for the visit, @stea90 and Paola were more excited than me,I've been there several times already, I knew what awaited me, and I knew what it meant the descend to get to the caves, but above all I knew what it wanted say go back.
Neptune's Caves, Coves de Neptú in Catalan, is located about 24 km from the beautiful city of Alghero, on the northwest side of the Capo Caccia promontory. Capo Caccia is an imposing limestone promontory.
As I said before, we opted to arrive by land, therefore via the staircase.
L’estate scorsa, durante le ferie, ho deciso di portare @stea90 e mia nipote Paola a fare una bella gita alla Grotta di Nettuno, sapevo che sarebbero rimasti sbalorditi da quanta bellezza. Si poteva decidere di arrivare in barca o a piedi attraverso le scale. Nella vita non mi piacciono le cose semplici, quindi alla fine si è optato di arrivare per le scale.
La mattina della gita siamo partiti a metà mattinata, avevamo due ore di macchina da fare per arrivare, mangiare qualcosa, e per poter essere sul posto per le 14…
Arrivati sul posto, eravamo belli carichi per la visita, @stea90 e Paola lo erano più di me, io essendoci già stata diverse volte, sapevo cosa mi aspettava, e sapevo cosa voleva dire fare la scalinata per arrivare alle grotte, ma soprattutto sapevo cosa voleva dire risalire.
La grotta di Nettuno, in catalano Coves de Neptú, è situata a circa 24 km dalla bellissima città di Alghero, nel versante nord-ovest del promontorio di Capo Caccia. Capo Caccia è un imponente promontorio di roccia calcarea. Come dicevo prima, abbiamo optato per arrivare via terra, quindi tramite la scalinata.
The famous stairway in question is called "Escala del Cabirol, in Catalan, (Scala del Capriolo, in Italian), formed by only 654 steps, which winds along the wall of the Capo Caccia massif, it was possible to access the cave by land only since 1959, the year in which it was finished, in fact until then it could only be accessed by sea, and naturally only if the weather conditions allowed it.
But let's talk a little more specifically about this wonder.
Going down the majestic staircase, one is amazed by the wonders that we find before us.
On the one hand you find yourself looking at the wonder of the sea waves that gently touch the rocks, and you stop to listen to them, you would like to listen to them for hours, but the curiosity to see what awaits you is too much and you savor those little moments to take them away with you, and continue your journey towards the descent…
On the other hand, you find this majestic ridge, you are fascinated by how beautiful, imposing and evocative it is…
La famosa scalinata in questione, è chiamata “ Escala del Cabirol, in catalano, ( Scala del Capriolo, in italiano), formata da soli 654 scalini, che si snoda lungo la parete del massiccio Capo Caccia, è stato possibile accedere alla Grotta via terra solo dal 1959, anno in cui venne terminata, infatti fino a quel momento si poteva accedere solo via mare, e naturalmente solo se le condizioni metereologiche lo permettevano.
Ma parliamo un po’ più nello specifico di questa meraviglia.
Scendendo la maestosa scalinata, si rimane sbalorditi dalle meraviglie che ci troviamo davanti. Da un lato ti ritrovi a guardare la meraviglia delle onde del mare che sfiorano dolcemente le rocce, e ti fermi ad ascoltarle, vorresti stare la ad ascoltarle per ore, ma la curiosità di vedere quello che ti aspetta è troppa e ti assapori quei piccoli istanti per portarli via con te, e prosegui il tuo cammino verso la discesa… Dall’altro ti ritrovi questo maestoso costone, ne rimani affascinato da quanto bello, imponente e suggestivo sia…
In the meantime, we continue our adventure, between stops to take a sip of water given the heat that was there, take a photo and admire the view, but this didn't just happen to us, you could see everyone getting lost in that short journey that separated us from the cave.
Finally finished the 654 steps you get to the entrance of the cave. You find yourself catapulted into another planet, the air you breathe is fresh, clean, a beautiful fresh air that regenerates you…
Intanto noi, continuiamo la nostra avventura, tra una tappa a bere un sorso d’acqua visto il caldo che c’era, scattare una foto e ammirare il panorama, ma questo non succedeva solo a noi, vedevi tutti quanti perdersi in quel breve tragitto che ci separava dalla grotta.
Finiti finalmente i 654 scalini si arriva all’entrata della grotta. Ci si ritrova catapultati in un altro pianeta, l’aria che si respira è fresca, pulita, una bella aria fresca che ti rigenera…
The Neptune's Caves is about 4km long, but visitors can only visit it for a few hundred meters, for safety reasons, only speleologists are allowed to admire the wonders of the whole cave.
It is said that the cave was discovered for the first time by a fisherman from Alghero named Ferrandino in 1700. It goes as a matter of fact that whoever discovered them has given us an enormous gift. In fact even Princes, (@stea90 you are not the Prince in question), Princesses, Kings and even important Italian and foreign scholars stopped to visit them. Carlo Alberto, King of Carignano, and future King of Sardinia, also visited them three times, the first time with the scholar Alberto La Marmora, the second time with his son Vittorio Emanuele, and future King of Italy, and the third time with John Warre Tyndale, who wrote "The Island of Sardinia", where he told not only of the wonders of Alghero and the Caves, but also of all of Sardinia, capturing its customs and traditions, as only good observers can do.
La Grotta di Nettuno, è lunga circa 4km, ma i visitatori possono visitarla solamente per qualche centinaia di metri, per questioni di sicurezza, solamente agli speleologi, è concesso ammirare le meraviglie di tutta la grotta.
Si narra che la grotta per la prima volta sia stata scoperta da un pescatore algherese di nome Ferrandino nel 1700. Va di fatto che chiunque le abbia scoperte ci ha fatto un enorme regalo. Infatti anche Principi,(@stea90 non sei tu il Principe in questione), Principesse, Re e persino importanti studiosi sia italiani che stranieri fermevano per visitarle. Anche Carlo Alberto Re di Carignano, e futuro Re di Sardegna, le visitò tre volte, la prima con lo studioso Alberto La Marmora, la seconda col figlio Vittorio Emanuele, e futuro Re d’Italia, e la terza volta con John Warre Tyndale, che scrisse “The Island of Sardinia”, dove raccontò oltre delle meraviglie di Alghero e della Grotta, raccontò di tutta la Sardegna, cogliendone usi e costumi, come solo i bravi osservatori sanno fare.
Arrived, we immediately find the main room, which gives us the wonderful view of Lake Lamarmora, with very transparent waters, about 100 meters long, 25 meters wide and with a depth of 9 meters, it is considered one of the largest lakes in Europe salt water, and in which in the past it was also possible to admire the Monk Seal. It is here that we discover the stoup, a monumental stalagmite about two meters high, and which houses small tanks where rainwater is collected which the birds that nest near the cave will use to drink.
Arrivati, troviamo subito la sala principale, che ci regala la meravigliosa visione del Lago Lamarmora, con delle acque trasparentissime, lungo circa 100 metri, largo 25 metri e con una profondità di 9 metri, è considerato uno dei più grandi laghi d’Europa di acqua salata, e nel quale in passato si poteva anche ammirare la Foca Monaca. E’ qui che scopriamo l’Acquasantiera, un monumentale stalagmite alta circa due metri, e che ospita delle vaschette dove si raccoglie l’acqua piovana che utilizzeranno gli uccelli che nidificano nelle vicinanze della grotta per abbeverarsi.
After a small descent of the path, we find ourselves in the Sala Delle Rovine, this room took this name precisely because of the havoc made by visitors in the 19th century.
Dopo una piccola discesa del percorso, ci troviamo nella Sala Delle Rovine, questa sala ha preso questo nome proprio a causa degli scempi fatti dai visitatori nell’800.
We continue the journey and we are catapulted into the Sala della Reggia, where we are once again speechless for the spectacle we are facing. Here we find spectacular calcite columns, which reach up to 9m in height, as if they were supporting the ceiling, all reflected in the clear waters. The ceiling height, crossing this room, reaches a height of 18m, which is the highest point of the cave that visitors can admire.
Proseguiamo il percorso e veniamo catapultati nella Sala della Reggia, dove si rimane ancora una volta senza parole per lo spettacolo che ci troviamo davanti. Qui troviamo delle spettacolari colonne calcitiche, che arrivano fino ai 9m di altezza, come se sorreggessero il soffitto, il tutto riflesso nelle limpide acque. L’altezza del soffitto, attraversando questa sala, arriva ad un’altezza di 18m, che è il punto più alto della grotta che i visitatori possono ammirare.
In the distance, between the calcitic columns, we can see a particular stalagmite called the Christmas Tree due to its shape.
In lontananza, tra le colonne calcitiche, possiamo vedere una particolare stalagmite chiamata Albero di Natale dovuta alla sua forma.
Continuing our journey we arrive at the end of the lake where the Spiaggia Dei Ciottolini is located, as in the past it was made up of small pebbles, apparently no longer present today due to the storm surges. It is said that in this beach in the first 150 years after the discovery of the cave, visits by sea were organized in the summer. As was told by the speleologist Mauro Mucedda in the Guide to the Neptune's Cave1994, the participants gathered at the port outside the ancient walls in view of the departure, which would have been around midnight.
They arrived at our destination at dawn, and the first thing the sailors did was to light up the cave with candles in precise points. Since the lake was not deep enough, the cave was visited with a small boat, and one reached the Spiaggia Dei Ciottolini where, on some special occasions from the Tribuna della Musica (I will tell you about it shortly), people played and on the beach it was allowed to dance.
Continuando il nostro cammino arriviamo alla fine del Lago dove si trova la Spiaggia Dei Ciottolini, in quanto in passato era appunto formata da dei piccoli sassolini, oggi non più presenti a quanto pare a causa delle mareggiate. Si narra che in questa spiaggia nei primi 150 anni dalla scoperta della grotta, nel periodo estivo si organizzavano delle visite via mare. Come è stato raccontato dallo speleologo Mauro Mucedda nella Guida alla Grotta di Nettuno 1994, i partecipanti, si riunivano al porto fuori le mura antiche in vista della partenza, che sarebbe stata intorno alla mezzanotte. Si arrivava a destinazione all’alba, e la prima cosa che i marinai facevano era quella di illuminare la Grotta con delle candele in punti ben precisi. Essendo il lago non abbastanza profondo si visitava la grotta con una barchetta, e si arrivava appunto fino alla Spiaggia Dei Ciottolini dove, in alcune occasioni speciali dalla Tribuna della Musica ( ve ne parlerò a breve ), si suonava e nella spiaggia era concesso ballare.
After the Sala Reggia we find the Sala Dell' Organo or Sala Smith, which took this name from the English captain who was among the first to visit it in the 19th century. This room is also called Sala Dell'Organo because in the center there is a large column, whose castings resemble an organ, it is the largest column in the Cave.
Dopo la Sala Reggia troviamo La Sala Organo o Sala Smith, prese questo nome dal capitano inglese che nell’800 fu tra i primi a visitarla. Questa sala è chiamata anche Sala Dell’Organo perché al centro si trova una grande colonna, le cui colate somigliano ad un organo, è la più grande colonna della Grotta.
Is then the vault of the Cupola, formed by smooth stalagmites on the whole wall which joins the ceiling with a dominant column.
After passing through the small columns that decorate the Sala delle Trine e dei Merletti, the route ends with the arrival at the Tribuna della Musica, which can be defined as a balcony from which, looking out, you can admire the Sala Della Reggia and Lake Lamarmora from the top. Furthermore, as I said just now, in this space during special visits, an orchestra played, and in the Spiaggia dei Ciottolini, people danced.
É poi la volta della Cupola, formata da stalagmiti lisce su tutta la parete che si unisce al soffitto con una dominante colonna.
Dopo aver attraversato delle piccole colonnine che decorano la Sala delle Trine e dei Merletti, il percorso termina con l’arrivo alla Tribuna della Musica, che può essere definito come un balcone dal quale affacciandosi si possono ammirare la Sala Della Reggia e il Lago Lamarmora dall’alto. Inoltre come dicevo poco fa, in questo spazio durante delle visite speciali, suonava un’orchestra, e nella Spiaggia dei Ciottolini, si danzava.

A lot of effort to go back up, but at the end of the trip we were happy to have visited such a fascinating place, and being early afternoon, we decided to take a walk along the Walls of Alghero, and stop for a cool drink.

Tanta fatica a risalire, ma alla fine del viaggio eravamo felici di aver visitato un posto così affascinante, ed essendo primo pomeriggio, abbiamo deciso di fare due passi lungo le mura di Alghero, e fermarci a bere qualcosa di fresco.
