Hello Hive and members of the Worldmappin community!
Your museum girlie is back to virtually tour you to another museum. This time, we will go to the National Museum of Natural History!
This museum is part of the big museums in the Philippines. Here, people can see plants, animals, ecosystems, geology, and natural heritage found in the country, while the other two museums shows art, culture, and history.
I'm all set to be your virtual tourguide for today! So… let’s not take this any longer. Let’s go and tour the Natural History Museum!
The view from outside. This museum is very closely connected to Luneta aka Rizal Park, and we can walk from here to go to the other two museums too! Intramuros, another historical place like Luneta Park, is also just a short distance away.
It’s scorching hot outside, so let’s hurry and go inside!
As soon as we got inside, we registered for free at the information desk.
Inside, we saw this big central space called the Tree of Life.
We also saw large animal displays such as the Philippine Eagle and Tamaraw, both animals that are endemic to the Philippines, which means you cannot find them anywhere else in the world.
We skipped the elevator and started climbing the stairs up to the 5th floor!
These are just a few of the things we got to see inside.
The first thing I was really excited about and have been meaning to see is the preserved body of a crocodile known as Lolong. It is one of the largest crocodiles ever kept in captivity in the world. I was in awe of how big it is!
There is also a reconstructed megalodon jaw and skeleton of wild pigs.
We can see the biodiversity of forests and ecosystems in this country made up of more than 7,000 islands!
Such as this Rafflesia, a rare type of plant known for having one of the largest single flowers in the world and these preserved endemic plant genera.
Collection of species found in the Philippines.
A model of a forest with some wildlife, and while looking at this, we also hear the sounds of animals. We can hear crickets, and it really feels like we are inside a forest.
Fossils and replicas of some species.
We then went inside a small room that features pictures of natural wonders in the country. Most of these are well known to both local and foreign tourists.
We then walked past that and went one floor down to see fossils and geology in the Philippines.
We will see:
A big globe.
A large model of the Philippines showing its islands and regions.
Rocks, minerals, and displays of oils found in the Philippines. Seeing these makes me realize how naturally rich this country is, only if these are used properly.
Stopping for photos to ahow you all.
The museum also features some minerals and rocks found in other parts of the Earth.
Models of mountain ranges in the Philippines and some wild species found there.
An exhibit of how gold is mined in the Philippines:
A traditional way of getting gold from rivers, featuring early local miners.
Across this is a model of a mountain mining area, which shows how gold is mined in the mountains using machines and tools. On the side is a model of a man inside an underground mine.
A model of a geothermal plant.
We also went inside a model of a cave featuring stalactites and stalagmites and bats, showing life inside a cave and what it sounds like inside.
We are now getting tired, so we must hurry!
Now we go down one more level inside the museum, and we are now at the marine life level.
We saw this model of a submarine and went inside. As we entered, we saw windows, and outside were underwater scenes shown on screens. It felt like we were really looking out of a submarine, seeing different fish species.
Beside the submarine is a model of a diver, and across are dolphins, sharks such as the butanding, and many more sea species found in the Philippines.
Marine life collections.
At this point, we were already tired and our feet were hurting, so we are skiping one level and went back to where we started to take some commemorative photos.
*That's it for our museum tour today! It was very tiring, but it was a fun day full of learning, wonder, and memories that I will always keep.
All photos shown are mine and were personally taken my me unless otherwise stated.
