Tirana - The Resurrection Cathedral / Die Auferstehungskathedrale

Had to go to the German Embassy in Tirana for a new passport. Of course, I took the chance to walk around the city for a bit. On the day of the application it was already too late to see much, but last Friday I went there to get the finished passport in the morning. So, I had a few hours for sightseeing & to find a Chinese restaurant. The first time in Tirana I already came across this church, but the lighting was not great, so I went back there on Friday. Therefore the photos in this post are from 2 days with very different lighting.

Mußte zur deutschen Botschaft in Tirana für einen neuen Reisepaß. Nahm natürlich die Gelegenheit wahr, die Stadt etwas zu erkunden. Am Tag der Beantragung war es schon etwas zu spät, um viel zu sehen, aber letzten Freitag fuhr ich nochmal hin zur Abholung, diesmal am Morgen. Also hatte ich einige Stunden, um mich umzusehen & ein chinesisches Restaurant zu finden. Beim erstenmal in Tirana kam ich schon an dieser Kirche vorbei. Da das Licht aber nicht toll war, ging ich Freitag nochmal hin. Daher sind die heutigen Bilder von 2 Tagen mit sehr unterschiedlichem Licht.

The church I found is the Orthodox Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ (Katedralja Ngjallja e Krishtit). It is supposedly the 3rd-largest Orthodox Church on the Balkans with 32m height, the bell tower actually as high as 46m. It opened in 2012 & is located in Tirana's city centre between the Skanderbeg Square & the Taiwan Park.	Die Kirche nennt sich Kathedrale der Auferstehung Christi (Katedralja e Ngjallja e Krishtit). Es soll die drittgrößte orthodoxe Kirche auf dem Balkan sein, mit 32m Höhe, wobei der Glockenturm sogar 46m mißt. Sie wurde 2012 eröffnet & befindet sich im Zentrum Tiranas zwischen Skanderbegplatz & Taiwanpark.

Under the cathedral is a cultural centre with a museum, a library & an indoor amphitheatre. Behind it is the Holy Synod.	Unter der Kathedrale ist ein Kulturzentrum mit Museum, Bücherei & einem Amphitheater. Dahinter steht die Heilige Synode.

As you can see, the church is a very modern building. I'm not really a fan of modern architecture, but in this case, it's not too bad. It looks fairly nice from the outside, inside it's even better. Unlike most other churches I know, it is very bright inside & you don't get the feeling of being in a grotto.	Wie man sieht, ist die Kirche ein sehr modernes Gebäude. Bin kein Fan moderner Architektur, aber in diesem Fall ist sie nicht schlecht. Sieht von außen schon recht gut aus, innen sogar besser. Anders als die meisten anderen Kirchen, die ich kenne, ist sie gut beleuchtet & man bekommt nicht das Gefühl, in einer Höhle zu sein.

The bell tower. Acc. to Wikipedia, the for pillars are supposed to look like Paschal Candles, representing the Four Evangelists. It has 16 bells, which sounds like overkill. Haven't heard them ring, though.	Der Glockenturm. Laut Wikipedia sollen die Säulen Osterkerzen darstellen, die die 4 Evangelisten symbolisieren. Er hat 16 Glocken, was leicht übertrieben erscheint. Habe sie jedoch nicht gehört.

Unusual for me, because I saw some tourists going inside, I also decided to enter. But before I did, I took a photo of the fairly elaborately decorated front gate:	Da ich einige Touristen hineingehen sah, wagte ich mich ausnahmsweise auch mal hinein. Vorher fotografierte ich jedoch das ziemlich stark verzierte Eingangstor.

The four corners (if you can call them that) of the building show what I think are wheat ears & at the top the Chi Rho, symbolising the 1st two Greek letters of 'Christ'.	Die 4 Ecken (falls man das so nennen kann) des Gebäudes zeigen wohl Weizenähren & an der Spitze das Chi-Rho bzw. Christusmonogramm.

Inside the entrance you are greated by the 'mother' of Christ & you can light some candles:	Im Eingang wird man von der 'Mutter Christi' begrüßt & man kann Kerzen entzünden:

As I said, the interior is rather bright & not because of artificial light, but because of the open construction. I like it.	Wie gesagt, das Innere ist recht hell, & nicht wegen künstlicher Beleuchtung, sondern durch die Konstruktion. Mir gefällt's.

I also like that the decorations are rather moderate, compared to what I have seen in other Orthodox churches. The Catholic Churches I am used to from my youth also didn't have simple chairs for the congregation, but benches where you could also kneel.	Mir gefällt auch, daß im Vergleich zu anderen orthodoxen Kirchen, die ich kenne, die Verzierungen eher zurückhaltend sind. Die katholischen Kirchen, die ich aus meiner Jugend kenne, hatten auch keine einfachen Stühle, sondern Gebetsbänke.

Also interesting that the Apse is actually walled off, & the priest - if he doesn't use the pulpit on the left - seemingly speaks from the door to the apse.	Auch interessant, daß die Apsis durch eine Wand abgetrennt ist & der Priester - falls er nicht die Kanzel links benutzt - offenbar aus der Apsistür spricht.

You know the guy (although he is usually pictured as a baby or young man, rarely as a boy). The Resurrection Cathedral is a piece of nicer modern architecture, & definitely worth a visit, if you are interested in the expression of modern Christianity, particularly after decades under an 'atheist' regime. Since it's in the very centre of Tirana, it is also easy to reach. & that's all for today, just a few more pics:

Den Burschen kennt man (auch wenn man ihn meist als Baby oder jungen Mann sieht, nicht als Jungen). Die Auferstehungskathedrale ist nettes Stück moderner Architektur, das definitiv einen Besuch wert ist, wenn man an modernem christlichen Ausdruck interessiert ist, besonders nach Jahrzehnten unter einem atheistischen Regime. Im Zentrum Tiranas ist sie auch einfach zu erreichen. & das soll es für heute gewesen sein, jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder:
