My RE&E Journey in Auz & Te Waipounamu: Day 22, Lost in Canterbury, Found in Hokitika

Another unplanned adventure, courtesy of Apple Maps. It was the longest planned driving day of the trip (6 hours), made longer as Apple Maps routed us into a dead end caused by construction. Luckily, Google Maps knew of it, and gave us an alternate route instead of going backwards for an hour. Country roads can be like that, but in the end, we laughed it off as part of the adventure.
Due to the southern alps, our drive from Twizel to Hokitika took us almost to Christchurch before heading west for Hokitika. The roadways here are so well-kept and spectacular that is made time melt by.
The route took us over Arthur's Pass. I'll have pictures of that later, when we drive back to Christchurch. Today I just wanted to get to Hokitika, so we nibbled on our charcuterie lunch and sipped Lemon Lift soda as we rolled along.

This was our accommodation in Hokitika. Soothing surf and sea breezes put us to ease immediately, as did the 2 minute walk to the beach.

Someone had fun with driftwood. I've never been to Tahiti, but it was a nice thought. The long underwater shelf created easy rolling surf to sink our toes into before finding a lovely meal in this little town. It's been so, so easy to find gluten free foods, and so comforting that every place we've eaten at really understands what that diet means.

After dinner, it was back to the beach for a glorious sunset, a cozy seaside cabin, and curiosity for what tomorrow will bring.
