Mi casa tiene dos pisos y vivo en el piso de arriba, ese piso tiene un balcón largo enrejado y sobre la reja crece una planta enredadera muy extendida del género Mansoa. Con frecuencia observo por todas partes a la planta porque es frecuentada y habitada por muchos insectos y arácnidos. En una de esas observaciones, vi a una iguana en la pared colindante de mi casa con un terreno. Busqué rápidamente la cámara fotográfica y le capturé una fotografía y además otras dos con zum.

My house has two floors and I live on the top floor, that floor has a long latticed balcony and over the lattice grows a very widespread vine plant of the genus Mansoa. I frequently observe the plant everywhere because it is frequented and inhabited by many insects and arachnids. On one such observation, I saw an iguana on the wall adjoining my house with a plot of land. I quickly reached for my digital camera and captured a photograph of it, and two more with a zoom.

Luego se me ocurrió bajar al piso de abajo para capturarle otras fotos, le capturé una sin zum y otras con zum, pero resultó que la iguana al verme trataba de esconderse inclinando su cuerpo hacia el lado del terreno.

Me extrañó mucho que la iguana no huía y luego pensé en buscar una escalera para posiblemente capturarle otras fotografías donde se apreciara mejor. Coloqué la escalera, subí y la fotografié. Cuando me ponía de pie en el peldaño de la escalera la iguana se inclinaba hacia el terreno y cuando me agachaba la iguana se movía hacia mi casa buscando verme.

I was very surprised that the iguana did not run away and then I thought of looking for a ladder to possibly capture other photographs where it could be better appreciated. I set up the ladder, climbed up and photographed it. When I stood on the rung of the ladder the iguana would lean towards the plot of land and when I crouched down the iguana would move towards my house looking to see me.

Como la iguana no huía y, como se ve en la fotografía anterior, su cola estaba en la pared hacia el lado de mi casa, se me ocurrió agarrarla por la cola y al hacerlo se giró bruscamente en sentido contrario. De esa forma logré capturarle varias fotografías en mayor detalle.

Since the iguana did not run away and, as you can see in the previous photograph, its tail was on the wall towards the side of my house, it occurred to me to grab it by the tail and in doing so it turned sharply in the opposite direction. That way I managed to capture several photographs of it in greater detail.

En la cola noté que en algún momento de su vida había perdido parte de ella, quizás por algún depredador, pero la cola ya se había regenerado.

I noticed that at some point in its life it had lost part of its tail, perhaps to a predator, but the tail had already regenerated.

Posteriormente, manteniendo agarrada su cola, guardé la cámara y decidí levantarla del sitio buscando la mejor manera, y trasladarla a otro lugar. La levanté, bajé de la escalera y fui con ella al patio. En el camino me encontré con uno de los morrocoyes que viven con nosotros y le coloqué a la iguana muy cerca. El morrocoy se detuvo y la miraba. La característica más llamativa de una iguana es su larga cola, que corresponde a dos tercios de su longitud total, las escamas modificadas en forma de sierra en su dorso y el pliegue gular o papada, más prominente en los machos. En el morrocoy el elemento más representativo de su anatomía es el caparazón que cubre toda su región dorsal, con excepción del cuello, la cabeza, las extremidades y la cola. Es curioso que a pesar de las diferencias anatómicas y morfológicas, la iguana y el morrocoy son reptiles.

Subsequently, keeping hold of its tail, I put the camera away and decided to lift it from the site looking for the best way, and move it to another place. I lifted it up, climbed down the ladder and went with it to the yard. On the way I met one of the tortoises that live with us and I placed the iguana very close to it. The tortoise stopped and looked at it. The most striking characteristics of an iguana is its long tail, which corresponds to two-thirds of its total length, the saw-like modified scales on its back and the gular fold or dewlap, more prominent in males. In the tortoise the most representative element of its anatomy is the shell that covers its entire dorsal region, with the exception of the neck, head, limbs and tail. It is curious that despite the anatomical and morphological differences, the iguana and the morroccoy are reptiles.

Cuando llegué a un sitio adecuado en el patio, coloqué a la iguana en el piso y la agarré por el cuello, esto me permitió capturarle fotografías de cerca. Ya había notado cuando la iguana estaba en la pared, que a su pliegue gular le faltaban unos pedazos, perdidos quizás por mordeduras de otra iguana en alguna pelea. En general, la iguana me permitió revisarla porque estaba muy tranquila.

When I reached a suitable spot in the yard, I placed the iguana on the ground and grabbed it by the neck, this allowed me to capture close-up photographs of it. I had already noticed when the iguana was on the wall, that its gular fold was missing a few pieces, lost perhaps from bites from another iguana in some fight. Overall, the iguana allowed me to check it out because it was so calm.

Mientras la fotografiaba y revisaba, noté que tenía garrapatas. Indagué en la literatura y encontré que las garrapatas son los parásitos externos más comunes que afectan a las iguanas. Estos parásitos son hematófagos (se alimentan de sangre) y transmiten muchas enfermedades, que en ocasiones son transmisibles a los animales domésticos y al ser humano. La infestación por garrapatas puede afectar el sistema inmunológico de los animales propiciando la aparición de otras enfermedades.

While photographing and checking it, I noticed that it had ticks. I searched in the literature and found that ticks are the most common external parasites that affect iguanas. These parasites are hematophagous (they feed on blood) and transmit many diseases, which are sometimes transmissible to pets and humans. Ticks infestation can affect the immune system of animals, leading to the development of other diseases.

La iguana tenía una garrapata en una de las patas traseras, una en el cuello y tres cerca de la cloaca. En total cinco garrapatas de diversos tamaños. Seguidamente procedí a quitárselas. Muestro las fotografías a continuación.

The iguana had one tick on one of its hind legs, one on its neck and three near its cloaca. In total five ticks of various sizes. I then proceeded to remove them. I show the photographs below.

Finalmente, luego de quitarle las garrapatas, solté a la iguana colocándola en el piso cerca de un ábol de aguacate para que se fuera. Al hacerlo no se movía, estaba muy tranquila, le moví la cola y tampoco hizo ningún movimiento. Después la agarré por la espalda e hice que las uñas de los dedos de sus patas delanteras se agarraran a la corteza agrietada del árbol, la fui soltando poco a poco y supongo que al sentir su peso percibiendo que se iba a caer hizo que reaccionara, se movió rápidamente y finalmente empezó a subir por el árbol. Finally, after removing the ticks, I released the iguana by placing it on the ground near an avocado tree so that it would go away. When I did so, it did not move, it was very calm, I wagged its tail and it did not move either. Then I grabbed it by the back and made the nails of the toes of its front legs grab the cracked bark of the tree, I released it little by little and I suppose that feeling its weight, sensing that it was going to fall, made it react, it moved quickly and finally began to climb up the tree.
