14 october 2024, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2525: a short story

Kemi drove through the night, only the sound of her car along the empty road. The headlights of the car were almost ineffective against the fog that covered everything. She was lost and her phone battery had gone flat that there was no means of reaching anyone.

She had been driving for hours now and she was so afraid she might run out of fuel, but her main fear was that she didn't want to get lost in the middle of nowhere, but she indeed was lost and haven't the slightest idea of where she was, or how to get out of here. It was such a complicated maze, and she had been wondering how she got into this mess in the first place.

Without warning, her car came to an abrupt halt. Kemi swore softly as she got out of the car. It was getting dark and she was becoming scared.
Straight ahead, a figure was seen hardly visible in the fog, standing still.

“Hello!” she said, “Hello! “Is anybody there?.” she shouted, waving her hands in the air, glad that she had company at last and perhaps this could be someone to give her a helping hand.

Kemi moved towards him. He was a tall man dressed in clean clothes, his face hidden in the darkness.

Then the man spoke “Do you need my assistance?”

"Yes, yes" Kemi replied with a sigh of relief. "My car is parked over there, I can't figure out what the problem is".

Suddenly, the man moved, stepping closer without walking, he sailed above the pavement like he was walking on air. Kemi's breath hitched as a cold wave of dread washed over her, this is no human at all! What was he? The figure's eyes looked into hers, those sockets were two dark pupils, hollow and empty, draining the warmth from her body.

Kemi was in danger, she knew that now!

She staggered backward and fell over a root. When she raised her eyes, the apparition was nowhere to be seen. Relieved, she took a deep breath and ran in the direction of her car. She quickly opened the car and locked the doors.

Then she felt a cold breath on her neck.

As she turned around, her heart jumped into her mouth, for staring right back at her was the very 'thing' she thought she had left behind.
