What a heartwarming story! You remind me of the innocence of children and how their perspectives don't go beyond what satisfies their heart (love of family) and their bellies. Sadly, the protagonist's family breaks up and he doesn't understand the reason for it.
In failed marriages, it's the children that suffer more which makes me understand why some parents would stay put (if they could) until the children are grown. I admire the protagonist's optimism and hope of bringing his parents together!
