Again at Osman & Joe … again the cell phone handed to the (ex)-wife … again, her smile like seen only once before in 30 years … again, another good and natural date … Mr. Thomas Stepforth tried to keep himself off Cloud 9.
He still realized he needed to observe his (ex)-wife … she wasn't “snowing” him, but she wasn't telling him things near to her heart, either.
Of course, if he hadn't paid attention, he would have missed that, because she had her finger on day-to-day Washington, and her storytelling was as fascinating as ever.
“Oh, we had some excitement around the corner just as you and I were enjoying our walk … big-international takedown of a former officer turned double agent … he decided to make a run for it and that was a mistake … I've seen the video … you wouldn't think a middle-aged military police officer could make up a gap like that, but there were two of them, and they just overtook this man with the running start right as he was about to jump into the Potomac – so all of them went in together and started wrestling in the water! They came out when they were ready, though – the one officer had a cuff on one side and the other on the other, and they just dragged their captor out. It didn't make the news, but I have contacts … they've been after that guy for years, and finally he came here for a woman, and so... .”
“Oh, I understand all that, Velma.”
She smiled.
“Yeah, but, you wouldn't get yourself publicly half-drowned over it.”
“That's what you think. Where is my cell phone, on this workday?”
“You're a billionaire, Tom. Missing a deal opportunity will hardly drown you.”
“Good point – but do you see mine?”
“Yes, Tom, I do.”
She smiled and was on to another story … no, she wasn't letting him back in … yet … only how close she let him slide up to her hinted that she was thinking of letting him back in .. .maybe … .
But, it was a good date … and he would come back on the 14th for a third … .
