My Story: The Wounded Dog

The pendulum clock in the sitting room had jingled. That was 2.30 p.m. School was closed for the day and the children were on their way home. Mama, the mother had gone to the market square. She had some vegetables and mango fruits to sell. Baba, their father had gone to his carpentry workshop.

As usual, Mma had dropped the children’s food in the kitchen. She had served the food on their respective plates. Each of the children will identify their food using their respective plates. So that the goats won't eat the food, the plates with the food were usually put on top of the suspended wooden shelves over the fire pot in the kitchen.

The day was bright and sunny. Baba had told Sunny, his first son to come and assist him in the workshop after school. Esty, the daughter knew that she would have to go and meet the mother in the market and collect the food items which Mma would have bought for the family meal.

When they came back from school, Esty suggested to the other siblings that they should enter the forest and hunt for ripe mangoes. Nobody objected so they quickly dropped their school bags and ran into the bush in search of ripe mangoes.

Bingo, their dog followed them. While walking around the bush checking every mango tree stand in search of mangoes to pick, Bingo was trapped in a trap. That was a serious trouble for the children because Mma and Baba will not take it easy with them.

The enthusiasm of hunting for mango fruits disappeared. Sunny became worried how Baba will treat him seeing he went to search for mangoes in the bush instead of going to the workshop. Esty started crying because she knew Mma would beat her very well.

The trap gave Bingo a big wound on the leg. Baba called someone who helped him treat Bingo's wound. Bingo was put on the bed and was covered with a big blanket to succour for the pain. Baba beat the children for what they did.
