The first fine for driving under the influence

On September 10, 1894, the first motorist who got behind the wheel in a drunken state was fined. It happened in London.

The driver turned out to be taxi driver George Smith. Shortly after midnight, he crashed into the wall of a house on Bond Street right in front of a policeman.

Smith was taken to the station, a doctor was called. He confirmed that the driver was drunk.

The offender was fined 1 pound and 5 shillings. In terms of modern money, this is almost 167 pounds.
