Pablo Picasso's Guernica returned to Spain

In 1981, Guernica returned to Spain. This painting by Pablo Picasso is considered one of the greatest works of art of the 20th century.

The huge canvas reflects the horrors of the war that fascism brought to humanity.

The painting was painted in 1937, after Hitler's bombers literally wiped out the small Basque city of Guernica in the north of the country during the Spanish Civil War. More than 1,500 residents were killed and about 1,000 were injured.

The artist seemed to foresee the terrible trials that humanity still had to go through during the Second World War.

When the regime of General Franco came to power in Spain, Picasso donated the painting to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. According to his will, she was to return to her homeland only after the restoration of democracy there.

And that day has come.
