My entry for the #wednesdaywalk community, as hosted by @tattodjay.
The summer Solstice officially made its way to this part of Wisconsin at 9:57 AM. I knew I would be "at work," as usual, and getting away for a walk at that time would be impossible given the needs of my narcissistic boss. So I got up early and headed back to the quarry to get a walk in. And celebrate a bit, I guess.
As I've gotten older, I've grown more fond of the holidays of old. I guess one could call them Pagan in nature, but I just think of them in terms of the Sun in relationship to us. It's a profound feeling to think that our ancestors, for thousands of years before us, knew that days like today were special. The least I could do was meander around the old rock quarry and enjoy the morning sun on it's annual cycle.
Today, if I recall my book reading, is the day the Sun turns into a strong, young hero. After today, it's all downhill until death with the winter Solstice, and then rebirth again. I definitely could feel the Sun's strength this morning in low sky. One could say I almost felt it's power through its ray. A wonderful feeling? Absolutely!
And all trails in the quarry led to the old quarry wall. One did wonder (well, I did at least today), how many times the face of this quarry felt the rays of the Sun on Solsticies? When did the original rock became exposed to the Sun? And how many people have spent their Solstice mornings here, like me, basking in the raw light, celebrating a very deep, human experience?
Yet not all was such heavy, thankful thoughts on this #wednesdaywalk. I did break out the Crocs for my daughter! She bought a pair of sparkly Crocs with butterflies, and she insisted I get a pair of Crocs too...I passed on the sparkles and went for the all-terrain ones. Hey, not too bad! Comfy!
Thanks for checking out my #wednesdaywalk. Hoping everyone out there had a peaceful and enjoyable Solstice too! Until next week!
