Glory Is But A Few Steps Away

I park my car just a short drive from my house, let my dog out, walk a hundred feet, and am in paradise.

Turning south, it's just me, my dog, and sun dappled woods.

The woods are lush and teeming with Nature's nourishment. Here's a lovely patch of nettles...

...and the prized ramps this whole county is abuzz about. It's leek season in these foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Everyone is exchanging leek recipes, leek dips, leek soups, leek leads, and leek stories.

My dog Hazel has it made here. I let her off leash and she traipses off into the woods. If you look closely at this shot, you will find her almost dead center about to get into the river.

Lemme tell ya, a wet and muddy dog is a very happy dog!

On our walk this day, we couldn't get much farther than 1/4 mile before having to turn back.

Half a mile in the other direction, someone has placed a memorial bench in one of the loveliest spots in this stretch. I wonder if Rose loved to come be here as much as I do.

What can I say about the view from that bench? I know I'd love to put a canoe in right here.

The biggest surprise of this day's walk was Mayapples! The woods here are filled with them! I cannot wait for June so that I can possibly find a few of the delicious fruits. Have you ever tasted one?

When it came time to leave and I walked back to the car, I realized not a single car had passed on the road along this walk of mine. Now and then I would hear the clop clop of a horse. These two stopped to exchange pleasantries with each other, and a wave with me, as a drove home.

I take this walk very often. It's near a spring where I get water every week, and my dog loves going there as much as I do. Unfortunately, this time she ranged a bit too far from me for my taste, and took a bit too long to come when called, so I will have to skip this place for a bit while she and I work on better recall.
