Indeed the tomatoes features in recipes of many different cultures. YOU can grow it on the balcony of your house in your home garden, and farm. It is easy to grow. If YOU have limited space, look for varieties specially developed for patio and window boxes. But is tomatoes a fruit or vegetable?
During the 16th century, returning Spanish conquistadors took it to Spain and borrow the Nahuatl word tomatl and called it tomate. Spanish enclave in Italy, North Africa and the middle east were enjoying the new delicacy. Later in the same century tomatoes reached Northern Europe. Italians called it Pomodoro(golden apple). The English called it tomate, later tomato. From Europe it travelled across the Atlantic all the way to North America where it became an important food in the 19th century.
The familiar red classic variety are useful for salads, soups, and sauces. The tiny red orang or yellow cherry tomatoes, have a high sugar content it is a delight to be eaten raw. For pizza and pasta dish, the oval shaped plum tomato with its firm flesh would be a good choice. The longe beefsteak tomato- called such because of its dense beefy flesy- ideal for stuffing or baking. The green tomato sometimes with distinctive stripes make excellent relish.
Tomatoes add their distinctive flavor and color to a huge range of delicious vegetables, egg, pasta, meat and fish dishes. If you cannot obtain fresh tomatoes you will no doubt find many processed tomato products in your local store.
