The invention of the original human-drawn rickshaw is some times credited to an American missionary in Japan in the 1870's named JONATHAN GABLE. He designed it because of his wife, it was called "jinrikisha"- meaning vehicle pulled by human power.
In time English called it Rickshaw. Over time different styles of rickshaw became prevalent throughout Asia. In Dhaka Bangladesh rickshaw remains a popular means of transportation .
Three-wheeled rickshaws made their debut in the late 1930's. Unlike the rickshaw deawn by a man usingtwo poles attached to the body of the vehicle, these looked similar to a big tricycle.
Every Rickshaw in Dhaka appear to have every square centimeter covered with decorations, perhaps to lure customers to this nymeans of transportation. Every possible surface of the vehicle is decorated with colorful designs, pictures, and pattern.
The Rickshaw Wallah or driver as they are called, leads a strenuous life, imagine spending the whole day cycling with heavy loads of people or goods. The rickshaw may also be used to carry sacks of rice, patatoes, onions or species for a merchant to sell at the market. Sometimes a passenger will perch on top of his mound of possessions, to by standers it may appear impossible for a driver to pull such heavy loads, yet in the heat of the sun or in the rains of the monsoon the humbt rickshaw driver is hard at work without complain. Most of the drivers came from poor rural areas where they are unable to eke out a living as farmers.
In most Asian cities Rickshaw has become endagared Species because of the desire for modern and mass transportation. Hoowever thereis an effort to preserve the rickshaw through improved designs. Many people consider this nonpolluting moode of travel to be both beneficial and enjoyable.
When traveling to Dhaka you may choose from the many maeans of public transportation=taxi, bus, motobike, auto-rickshaw or colorful cycle rickshaw.
You will never forget the leisurely experience of a ride through the crowded streets of Dhaka on a cycle Rickshaw.
