HAIKU # 3: Be Like the Water.

A journey begins, My stream flows with renewed hope, Life's haiku unfolds. (2).png

Water gushes quick,
Focus sharp, tunnel vision work,
Flows in a gold cup.

Another day ahead, another reason to celebrate that we are #alive. Bruce Lee said that we need to be like the water and clear our minds to be ready to take any form. Life has been a struggle for me these few years and with the 2 years of me being in the hive blockchain the We Are Alive Tribe is one of my inspirations to move forward and continue life. My first few posts are intended to be motivational and in form of life-sharing. Fortunately, I saw one of @flaxz posts and found out about the We Are Alive Tribe. Now I am more focused and practicing to improve my tunnel vision in achieving goals.

Entering the hive blockchain, back when I was still in the high school department it was really a struggle for me to juggle between the thing that I love to do and the godzilla pile packs of things that I need to do for work. Being a teacher, an educator, a curriculum map designer, a computer laboratory custodian, a graphics artist, a cook, and a streamer is a never-ending cycle of work, work, work, sleep, and work. It has also been my problem to focus and have tunnel vision for a specific goal especially when I have a long time to prepare for a certain goal.

The attitude of doing things in the last moments made it easier for me to focus but also took a toll because of the stress it brings. Observing myself, the reason me working more effectively and productively at the last minute is that my stream of thought about new ideas is overflowing. The stress of having to meet a tight deadline and the pressure of people relying on me to finish the task makes me more focused and alive. These give me a tunnel vision on what is necessary to be done in the fastest time possible.

But, clean success is not always been the result of my cramming attitude. Most of the time, I feel massive burnout especially when my body is giving up. Now that I have another opportunity to start again, as a college professor, with the appointment that I have, I am committed to improving the work ethic that I am used to and trying out new strategies to stay focused.

Regulatory Focus Theory

I have come across research on regulatory focus and reading it made me relate to the principles that it mentions. People's regulatory foci, according to Higgins, E. Tory, are composed of three factors that serve to illustrate the differences between a promotion focus and a prevention focus: (a) the needs that people are seeking to satisfy, (b) the nature of the goal or standard that people are trying to achieve or match, and (c) the psychological situations that people care about. These are also the things that I need to consider in other for me to improve my focus.

After reading about this theory I came to a commitment to organize the tasks that I need to do, provide the necessary care and needs that my body requires to do the tasks, and clear my mind from problems that are not related to the tasks at hand.

The gym life commitment also helped me to fulfill all of these three factors of focus. Going to the gym not only buffs my body for the needed exercise that it needs but also clears the mind from stress.

Reflection

Before knowing all of these, I am a stubborn bastard that will just start any task in the very last hour or minute that needed to be submitted or accomplished. Now after all the life challenges that were brought to me, especially the death of my father and our financial capacity to support him, I am now more committed to making use of my time productively.

I also started to take care of my health and stopped drinking alcohol and smoking substances. Our time in this world is very finite and there are limited opportunities for a person to have. I want to be alive and thrive even more, to continually improve and learn. Like water always ready to adapt, like a stream that continues to live.

Reflective questions:

  • How do you maintain focus on work?
  • Do you have a good work-life balance?
  • Is it possible to rush towards success without sacrificing our mental and physical health?

Some famous quotes to ponder on:

  • "Focused. I'm a hustler. And my hustle is trying to figure out the best ways to do what I like without having to do much else." - Mos Def

  • "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill

  • "Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why." - Eddie Cantor

I will also be posting reflective questions and some famous quotes to ponder alongside the haiku poems that will be posted with them. I want to hear your thoughts in the comments too and hope they spark new hope for everyone. I am tagging @suteru and @tpkidkai as witnesses of my daily commitment. They will also punish me if I break this commitment.

Haiku Explanation

Haiku poems as short passages for my deep thoughts. In its short forms hides gigantic feelings one person can have. It is a form of Japanese poetry that consists of three lines, each line consisting of structured limited syllables. The first line and the third line contain five (5) syllables, while the second line only has seven (7).

With this series of Haiku poems, I aim to express myself and organize my thoughts while leaving the semi-hidden emotions that I have. I also want to practice being consistent by making short poems and logging my life experiences every day.

This is the start of countless tries of me trying to be productive and form a productive habit. This is also a form of escape from reality. I hope in this way I can funnel my thoughts and my feelings and establish a foundation of hope and unrelenting commitment.
