I am a big cartoon fan. Before the Netflix era, I used to watch Cartoon Network as an adult. Different cartoons are used to make fun of the pre-historical wheel invention by mankind. The wheel made of rock and clay is one of the earliest infections and it is the base of many important features in the human world. It has been used until today for transportation methods for big heavy objects, including us, and also for machines. Indeed it has a big importance for us. However, our species advanced so much in many aspects that we are even thinking of colonizing other planets. In my point of view, the biggest achievement of civilization is the internet.
Sou um grande fã de desenhos animados. Antes da era da Netflix, costumava assistir ao Cartoon Network como adulto. Diferentes desenhos animados costumam fazer piadas sobre a invenção da roda pré-histórica pelo ser humano. A roda feita de pedra e argila é uma das primeiras invenções e é a base de muitas características importantes no mundo humano. Ela tem sido usada até hoje em métodos de transporte para objetos grandes e pesados, incluindo nós mesmos, e também em máquinas. De fato, ela tem uma grande importância para nós. No entanto, nossa espécie avançou tanto em muitos aspectos que estamos até pensando em colonizar outros planetas. Na minha opinião, a maior conquista da civilização é a internet.
Humans have been always concerned about information transmission. The world is big and how we could connect people separated by thousands of kilometers in distance? In our beginnings, we started to think about how to solve that. Ancient people began to use smoke with that purpose to warn other villages about attacks for example. After that, it came messages delivered by pigeons and bottles, but they weren't precise for sure. Humans invented messages transmitted by electricity so came the telegrams using special coding called the code Morse. But still, you had to be trained to understand these messages. A great revolution was the telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell, which allowed people to call each other over long distances, however, written message was still a challenge taking some time to be delivered from one spot to the other by regular mail. But the internet arrived in a great style with e-mails and instant messaging. The Internet allowed communication between any two spots in a world in milliseconds. Now we can do work meetings with people in different countries after having breakfast in our own homes, no need to travel saving money for companies. A whole conference with hundreds of people can be done online. Internet involved so much that even replaced cable TV. Now you can watch movies and channels using your internet connection. Nowadays it even created the possibility to replace physical money and banks. It is very difficult to foresee all the possibilities that the internet will bring in the future but for sure I am dependent on this invention.
Os seres humanos sempre se preocuparam com a transmissão de informações. O mundo é grande, e como poderíamos conectar pessoas separadas por milhares de quilômetros de distância? Em nossos primórdios, começamos a pensar em como resolver isso. As pessoas antigas começaram a usar fumaça com esse propósito para alertar outras aldeias, por exemplo, sobre ataques. Depois disso, vieram mensagens entregues por pombos e garrafas, mas elas não eram precisas, com certeza. Os seres humanos inventaram mensagens transmitidas por eletricidade, e assim surgiram os telegramas, que usavam uma codificação especial chamada código Morse. No entanto, ainda era necessário ser treinado para entender essas mensagens. Uma grande revolução foi o telefone, inventado por Alexander Graham Bell, que permitiu que as pessoas se ligassem umas às outras a longas distâncias, no entanto, as mensagens escritas ainda eram um desafio, levando algum tempo para serem entregues de um local ao outro pelo correio regular.
Mas a internet chegou com grande estilo, trazendo e-mails e mensagens instantâneas. A internet permitiu a comunicação entre qualquer dois pontos do mundo em milissegundos. Agora podemos fazer reuniões de trabalho com pessoas em diferentes países após tomar o café da manhã em nossas próprias casas, sem a necessidade de viajar, o que economiza dinheiro para as empresas. Uma conferência inteira com centenas de pessoas pode ser realizada online. A internet se expandiu tanto que até substituiu a TV a cabo. Agora você pode assistir a filmes e canais usando sua conexão com a internet. Hoje em dia, ela até criou a possibilidade de substituir dinheiro físico e bancos. É muito difícil prever todas as possibilidades que a internet trará no futuro, mas com certeza sou dependente dessa invenção.
On the other hand, our civilization development also brought some problems for the world. The constant growth of our population with no natural predators started to make food a scarce resource. On behalf of city growth, many forests were cut, and trees and animal populations went down. In addition, our combustion machines produce tons of gases that are harmful to us, other animals, and even the planet by itself. The planet is dying and governments and people are trying to reduce our impact in this hurt environment. It is difficult to balance progression and sustainability. How we can progress more if the planet is dying? Are we going to conquer another planet to do the same? For this reason, we need to be more conscious of this problem and teach our kids how to progress and help the planet to survive. Our intelligence is being used to find other ways to generate energy and food in addition to solving trash problems. We have plenty of intelligence to continue our progress and hurt less the planet.
Por outro lado, o desenvolvimento de nossa civilização também trouxe alguns problemas para o mundo. O crescimento constante de nossa população, sem predadores naturais, começou a tornar os alimentos um recurso escasso. Em nome do crescimento das cidades, muitas florestas foram desmatadas, levando à redução das populações de árvores e animais. Além disso, nossas máquinas a combustão produzem toneladas de gases prejudiciais a nós, a outros animais e até mesmo ao próprio planeta. O planeta está morrendo, e governos e pessoas estão tentando reduzir nosso impacto neste ambiente ferido. É difícil equilibrar o progresso e a sustentabilidade. Como podemos progredir mais se o planeta está morrendo? Será que vamos conquistar outro planeta para fazer o mesmo?
Por essa razão, precisamos estar mais conscientes desse problema e ensinar nossos filhos a progredir e ajudar o planeta a sobreviver. Nossa inteligência está sendo usada para encontrar outras maneiras de gerar energia e alimentos, além de resolver problemas relacionados ao lixo. Temos inteligência de sobra para continuar nosso progresso e causar menos danos ao planeta.
