The Irony of Democracy in Nigeria

I remember vividly the first general class I took in secondary school on the topic of democracy and how the whole class ended in confused chaos because of what the supposed meaning of democracy- Government of the people, by the people and for the people is not being practiced by the government and is just mere definition with the opposite effect in my country.

The people elected to political positions, take power and trample the same people who elected them, we have no say, even when there is a freedom to speech but your freedom after isn't guaranteed, as when we decide to voice out our pain, they send shot fires our way killing family and friends, and still have the audacity to cover up their crime, because all power belongs to them and not the people, then where is the democracy? The last #endsars protest outcome is a testament to that.

What about the last election? This was a real eye-opener to how corrupt and far gone the messy situation of our electoral system has gotten, there is nothing like a free and fair election, oh my! We had hopes, that Nigeria would see the light at the end of the tunnel, hope for a new face in government, and maybe there would be a real change, but all that hope was dashed again, we saw videos of political thugs stealing the ballot boxes, causing commotion and forcefully stopping or bribing people to vote for their corrupt leaders, even though fed up Nigerians came out in their numbers to execute their constitutional right, sadly corruption still leads and the result of that bad election is the magnified suffering the whole country, of course except them corrupt leaders face today.

The increased cost of fuel price which directly affects every other price of goods and commodities in the country, increasing the cost of living and making those who were barely managing and even those who thought they had something now equally suffer at the hands of the present wicked government. So it is fair to say that democracy is far from being practiced in Nigeria, what practice here is democracy in disguise.

What can be implemented?

To solve a problem, you must first tackle the root of that problem and without a doubt, the number one problem we currently face which affects every other problem is bad governance, and corrupt leaders, left for me they all need to be scraped and let the leaders of tomorrow that were promised the future take power, the government position shouldn't be a recycled office for old self-centered and corrupt leaders with the same degrading idea coming over and over again to rule the present generation when other countries are developing fast, they they are good at is holding us back, covering our mouth from speaking the truth by instilling fear in us through killing and making the country a living hell for its citizens, until then, it is sad to speak this fact, but It is the truth. We are yet to see the face of true democracy in Nigeria.
