New year resolutions barely work, here's why.

It's nothing new that every year, literally everyone on social media just goes on and on about new year resolutions. Next year, I'mma do this, do that, cut off, allow in, say no, go here, go there. I have absolutely nothing against these resolutions but it's now like a very noisy trend especially when it comes from people you've known for ages and never have they achieved up to 50% of their yearly resolutions and it's somewhat exhausting to be reading about them.

Are new year resolutions even necessary?

Absolutely! Every new year is like life is always giving us a clean slate and saying write what you want into it, do everything to make it happen. Of course the past year isn't erased from the records but seeing the calendar say it's the first day of the first month and a fresh new year gives us a sense of a new beginning and that's beautiful. The feeling of looking at the past year as a long-distant-past just comes naturally. Literally everyone feels new on a new year. It's totally okay to reflect, reminisce on the past year and be careful to note all the aspects which you didn't do well, goals you didn't achieve as well, moments you derailed and why. Tracing these mistakes helps us understand the events better and equally gives us wisdom and insight on how to live on in the new year. It would be sheer foolishness to repeat the exact same mistake twice.

Why do I say new year resolutions barely work

Last month I read a book titled Deep Work by Cal Newport. The author wrote about how we are busy at a lot of things rather than focus on one task at a time and this hinders productivity. This is exactly why these resolutions don't work. People try to put too much pressure on themselves, set unrealistic goals, try to change a lifetime habit in a week and that's impossible! These things simply overwhelm them and they give up before the year gets to half. They derail and in no time find themselves stuck in the same old mistake, lifestyle and habit.

My thoughts on new year resolutions

👉 It's totally okay to even begin the year without knowing where to start, what to do, where to go. Not that it's the best way to start the year but because sometimes you're really gonna feel this way. Don't push yourself too hard if you don't know where to start. Breathe and reflect. Reflection is like sitting at a point and looking back at your life. You're definitely going to find something. By all means pray, plan and then build.

👉 Set short term goals for yourself, they must be feasible. Work towards them one after the other. Do not set too many lest you feel overwhelmed too quickly. As you hit a milestone, take it off the list. When you're close to achieving them all, you can then set a few more.

👉 Even in the creation story, the universe wasn't created in a day. History shows a pattern in which everything was created and only when one thing was successfully made, did another come into existence. This is how things work.

👉 Make sure you always have your goals in sight and in mind, this will be your greatest motivation and restraint from detailing.

I think this is my first post for the year so it's safe to say Happy new year! It's okay to tag your friends or anyone on the platform. It would be good to see we all made it this far. Cheers to new beginnings🥂
