Childhood is a stress-free stage of life, just play, eat, sleep and play again..No fear, no worries.
Whenever I think of my childhood, I end up smiling widely. Personally, I had a memorable childhood. Everyone of us knows what our childhood was like and the kind of memories we get when we try think about it. I guess one thing that cannot be taken out is the games we played(they're what made them beautiful). The memories from the games is what makes me remember and connect with people from that time.
I also remember when at the time, older persons told me that I wasn't enjoying good games as they supposedly played even better games in their time. It's funny how I say same thing to kids nowadays. I guess every child would have a game(s) that would make them smile in due time.
So, let's dive right into the games I enjoyed as a child. Let's begin!
AYO
I recently learnt the name. I've tried to think of what it was called when I was young but I couldn't. This game can be played be quite a number of people (2-4) persons; you can also play alone. In this game, a box is drawn on the floor which holds 12 holes(six on each side) and uses 48 seeds(it actually comes in a wooden box, but since we didn't own one at the time, we drew the box with a stick and used stones or cherry seeds as our seeds).
The first player starts by picking up all the seeds from a hole and running them clockwise. The opponent does the same. If the movement ends in a hole with four seeds on the opponents side, the player takes those seeds.
SHOOTING-SHOOTING
sourceIn this game, we made use of a water gun. We fill it up with water, divide ourselves into groups, aimed at our opponents and shoot at them while imitating gunshot sounds using our mouths. We shoot at ourselves, tried to get others wet while trying to not get wet ourselves.
WHEN WILL YOU MARRY? (SKIPPING)
sourceIn this game, two persons hold the two ends of a rope and turn it in a clockwise direction. Another person jumps into the already rolling rope and skip while others sing; 🎶When will you marry?🎶 🎶This year or next year?..Single forever🎶 🎶January...February...March...April..May...June...July... August... September... October... November... December🎶 🎶Who will you marry?🎶 🎶Rich... poor..beggar...or thief (×2)🎶 🎶How many children will you have?🎶 🎶1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..9........🎶 If while skipping, the person stops for any reason, then he/she has failed. The most interesting part of this story is when the skipper fails at any point when the "poor, beggar or thief" chant is going on. The whole crowd cheers and taunts the person.
FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN
In this game, everyone has a partner and they all form a circle with your partner standing behind you. Those behind start running round while those in front stand still when someone sings; 🎶There is fire on the mountain🎶 Everyone else replies, 🎶Run..run..run.🎶 🎶A big, big fire🎶 🎶Run.. run.. run.🎶 🎶The fire is out!!!🎶🎶 At the chant of "fire is out", all the partners who have been running start scrambling to return to their partners. The last person to get to his/her partner gets disqualified alongside his partner. The remaining participants swap places and the game continues....
We played these games till we get exhausted(which is almost rare) or are called away by our parents
There are so many other games like cards, ludo, playing football in the rain, etc, but, I'll just stop here. I read some of y'all's articles and I felt nostalgic. Childhood was everything the name depicts and more. I'm grateful for the games and everyone who made my childhood really memorable.
