Magnificent impression no doubt. When we look at the mosque in the middle of Banda Aceh City. Especially when dusk turns to night and the lights of the mosque begin to glow, the impression of majesty becomes even more pronounced. Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is like an icon for this city. As one of the most beautiful mosques in Indonesia, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is also full of historical value. The mosque, which was designed by an Italian-blooded architect, implies a blend of several styles. Like, Dutch and Turkish colonial style. At first, this mosque was the mosque of the Sultanate of Aceh. In the Dutch era, Baiturrahman was burned by the Dutch. But in 1875, or two years later, the Dutch rebuilt it as a replacement for the mosque which had been destroyed. Around December 1883, the mosque was renovated. At that time, the design of the mosque was still with one dome. But in 1935 the mosque was expanded to three domes, and finally had five domes in 1968. In the past, when it was used as the Dutch defense headquarters in the Aceh War (1873), Major General Kohler was shot dead in the courtyard of this mosque. And the former shooting site is immortalized with a small monument. This mosque with a large courtyard is not just a place of worship for the people in the foyer of Mecca. However, it is also a symbol of the religious life and nationalism of the Acehnese people, which cannot be separated from Islamic culture. One that is also an interesting story here, when the tsunami hit this mosque on December 26, 2004, God seemed to be showing His greatness. The mosque, which is not far from the beach, still stands strong, even though the tsunami hit and other buildings around it were razed to the ground.
