Soulkeep is up and running. The game is fun. I've enjoyed the gameplay and I've enjoyed the YouTube content that I've found.
I bought a whopping 3 packs in the presale and haven't added anything to that yet. Currently packs are available on the secondary market for about $1.50. Many of the towers and spells are quite inexpensive individually on the secondary market.
I still have to wait a couple of days for some PeakD proceeds to convert to hive before I'm able to buy up some additional cards.
Here's what I have so far
So you can see that it is possible to play and see some success with very little invested.
After my next little bit of Hive comes through, I plan to buy up these Recommended Defenses (these are recommended for the first league 2 gateway level).
I've been able to play with all of these except Striking Critic during my league 1 gateway levels. My favorite of these to use so far have been Card Sharp and Stew of Doom.
In addition to these cards, I plan to buy some cards that I've seen used on YouTube. The one card that is universally recommended seems to be Quad Killer which I don't plan to buy one right away as the current cost is more than I'm ready to invest in an individual card.
