Coffee by the canal and a bit of history.

As part of a trip up to Exeter Canal Basin to finish of a couple off photos for a Hive Monomad Post. I thought I’d stop for a quick coffee and may be a quick cider, there is quite a bit of choice as there are a number of larger coffee shops and bars serving lunchtime coffees dotted around the canal basin.

For 50p Butts Ferry drops you off almost right opposite the Cellar coffee shops and saves you about a 1K walk up and over the bridge, so worth 50p if you desperate for a coffee and a cake.

For a bit of exercise I wandered down to the end where the mid Victorian cellar buildings are and there a couple of smaller independent coffee emporiums in the old row I chose Cellar Coffee.

Mostly because of the view and the deck chairs by the basin.

That said the cappuccino and huge slice of carrot cake were a bonus. They did warn me about the seagulls but they didn’t bother me at all, they probably realised with the size of the slice there would be plenty left for them anyway.

One thing to be aware of here is the deck chairs are just on the other side of the path that runs along the basin and there are no hand rails at this point so watch out for walkers and cyclists. And don’t step too far back out of the way taking photos as it’s a bit of a swim to the nearest steps.

So there we are Hivers coffee and cake all finished and time to wander down the canal basin for a small cider in one of the many local pubs about 500m down, the Port Royal is another Victorian building but it’s been extensively modernised.
