Coffee brewing method : V60 Pour over coffee recipe

V60 Overview
This is a coffee pour over technique that focuses on water being poured in concentric circles. This allows for every coffee ground to saturated and for a full extraction of flavor from the grounds. The Japanese company, Hario is well known for their heat resistant glassware and pour over related products.

Apparatus :

  • Means of water heating & pouring water eg. Gooseneck kettle
  • V60 filter papers
  • Glassware for dripping & collection.

Scale & coffee dosage
The scale will allow for accurate measurement. Just like the French press method, the ratio of 1:15 applies. This is of course dependent on personal preference. Reccomended dosage : for every 1 gram of coffee , there should be 15 grams of water.

Coffee Grinder
Burr grinders improve the taste of coffee beans , as burr grinders do not simply slice beans into tiny bits, they grind by means of pressure. Even pressure means even grinding of the coffee beans.

Recommended grinding setting : medium to fine

Characteristics of V60
This method of pour over has a distinctive clear, crisp and smooth feel to it.

Coffee process & brew time
There are 3 parts to a pour over :

  • First pour : upon pouring the first 100ml, an observable coffee bloom will be visible. The fresher the coffee the greater its bloom.
  • Second pouring : upon the seconding pouring of 100ml , the coffee bloom will settle and it will begin to release air bubbles.
  • Third pouring : upon the third pour of 100ml, a thin crema like layer sits atop the coffee below.

The recommended brew time 3-4 minutes long.

Coffee experience & conclusion
My personal experience with this brew method was with an ethiopian coffee. Ethiopian coffee is well known for its sweet acidic taste profile. Separation of the 3 pours allows one to try and observe a decernable difference between the pours if possible.

The aroma and taste of V60 poured coffee is an experience unlike any other. This type of brew method helps highlight and truly taste/experience the coffee you chose. It allows for a full flavor experience , without being too intense or harsh on the tongue.
