A Personal Experience of Disconnection

In today's digital age, it is hard to imagine life without our devices; one we have come to rely on for our day-to-day activities. We are constantly connected to our phones, tablets and laptops, be it for entertainment purposes, business affairs, communication etc, and it is easy to take them for granted.

But what happens if we are forced to be disconnected from our devices? Whether it's a power outage, our personal choices, technical glitches or bad luck like being stolen or having fault, going without our devices can be a daunting experience.

I have always had my phone and laptop charged because I do not want a situation where everything would turn like a blackout for me, but there has been one particular time I experienced going without my phone for a short period and it was as if the world has come to an end for me.

Electricity cannot be guaranteed in my country except for some particular areas that enjoy constant light and cannot relate when others are complaining of light issues. This is why I had to get power banks to keep me active and ensure my phone was always charged.

I travelled to my aunt's place on this particular day with my phone and two power banks fully charged. I was also assured there would be light at her place and wouldn't even use up my power banks but I was wrong. She didn't tell me their light had issues for a while until I got there, maybe I could have stayed and waited till the light was resolved.

On getting there, there was no light. I thought they would bring it later and so, my phone was almost down so I used one of my power banks to charge it. I was still calm and expectant about the light but at that moment, my aunt had been stylishly telling me about the light issue and how their transformer got blown up for days. Instantly, my mood changed when I thought about the days I would be staying over and how I would cope if my power banks were down.

She has a generator but she told me it had a fault and it would cost a lot to get it fixed. I couldn't think of doing that but need another way to charge my gadgets so I don't go without them. But she kept assuring me they would fix the light soon but my mind was still not calm about the whole thing.

The next day, I was still using the first power bank which was towards evening and the thought of how to charge was a dilemma to me. I couldn't focus on anything else but thinking what if my phone was down, how would I stay active, especially on Hive? I had drafted some posts the previous night and scheduled them in case my phone went down eventually, at least some posts are scheduled because it would hurt me so much to miss a day without posting on Hive.

My aunt was now using my power bank and the whole thing became devastating. My body system was out of the world and things I could do in the house with excitement weren't like that. All I wanted was light to come so I could come back to life. I felt so unhappy and got peevish over unnecessary things.

Fast forward to the fourth day, at this point, my power banks were down and the remaining percentage on my phone was at 30 something. I kept switching off my data so that it doesn't die down to the extent I wouldn't be able to receive calls. My online activities were paused as I didn't want to press my phone for too long.

At that point, I had given up and was almost telling my aunt I would be leaving the next day. My plan was to use 4 more days which I would be leaving the following week but with the situation I was in, I couldn't bear it anymore.

Had it been there was a spot where they charge phones, it would have been a lot easier but no, her house was situated in a remote area where it's hard to even get a bike to the main road. So, I waited till the evening to inform her about my leaving the next day but something unexpected happened.

I was in my room staring at my phone and was bitter in my heart, regretting coming when they had issues with light and peeping through the remaining per cent which was at 12.

"My phone had never gotten to this per cent since I started using it", I thought to myself with a frown face as if a bad news had occurred. As I put my phone down on the bed ready to lie down as everything was just boring to me and I felt so lonely, my aunt just shouted from her room, "Busayo, light has come" in our language.

You need to see how I jumped up from the bed to confirm. My room's light was switched off, so I turned on the wall socket and it was so. I screamed in excitement and immediately plugged in everything I needed to plug. In my mind, I was praying the light would not go but stay for a long time. After plugging my gadgets, my mood came back to life. My system was rebooted and I was jubilating all around that my aunt was surprised to see how my excitement was all over the house.

The light stayed up till the following day and when it went off in the afternoon, it wasn't up to 10 minutes before they brought it back. That was how I changed my mind and stayed till the normal day I intended. As soon as my phone was charged, I zoomed into action with immediate effect 😄

Till I left, there was light. I couldn't imagine myself living without my phone and it was like they took a part of me that was functioning well away.
