Unlocking Productivity: The Transformative Power of Touch Typing

One of the things that I find liberating in my everyday activities on the internet is touch typing. It was not until I took the time to learn and have continued practicing daily ever since that I realised that it really is a skill one should hone, as it can 10x your productivity, especially by being proficient at it.

First off, this community exists because I felt there was a need for a space to foster interactions and camaraderie among typists on Hive and encourage beginners to take large strides towards acquiring touch-typing skills for themselves.

Touch typing is essentially a method of typing on a keyboard where the typist does so without looking at the keys. Opposed to the hunt-and-peck method, touch typing allows for a more seamless and efficient typing experience. And here are a few of the ways it can boost your productivity once acquired and practiced consistently:

  • Increased Typing Speed

Although speed depends greatly on practice, touch typing guarantees a more fluid and higher speed compared to the hunt-and-peck method, where one hunts (with their eyes) for each key they need and then presses with the nearest or most convenient finger.

The increase in speed with touch typing enables one to save time, meet deadlines, and communicate much better. For example, being able to use fifteen minutes to write a post with 700+ words on days with tight schedules can come in really handy. Imagine completing similar tasks in the same manner.

In conversations over the internet, being able to express and send in your thoughts via text quickly and efficiently goes a long way in providing a better experience interacting with people, especially in workplaces.

Efficient Multitasking

The fact that one doesn't have to look at the keyboard while typing allows for seamless transitions between different tasks, thus enabling one to multitask more efficiently.

Being able to quickly respond to messages in the middle of writing a post or an email is an example. Taking a quick look at something outside of your computer—like if your phone is actually plugged in—is another example.

Reduced Cognitive Load

Touch typing eliminates the need to look at the keyboard, and that allows one to concentrate more on the content being typed. And it helps to get better results.

Since my brain already knows where the keys are and I can basically type words without thinking about how to do that on the keyboard, it allows me to be more creative, expressive, and accurate with what I am typing. The quality of one's post on Hive can be greatly increased with the ability to concentrate more on their thought process.

The combined benefits of increased speed, efficient multitasking, and reduced cognitive load make touch typing a powerful skill to hone, as it can boost productivity across different aspects of work and daily activities. Interacting on Hive is much more efficient with it, as is creating content.
