A Visit to Robin Hood's Hideaway

It was a bit cloudy today as we visited Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. The most well known tree in the forest is the Major Oak, where, allegedly Robin Hood hid from the Sherrif of Nottingham, and to also shelter there.

Afer a mooch in the visitor centre, we followed the signposts for the Major Oak Trail. As well as the Major Oak, there were more creepy arsed trees along the trail.

After a short walk, we came to the Major Oak. As children, we could actually hide in the tree, but it is now fenced off to protect it as it is around 800 – 1100 years. The oak's branches are now supported. If you were this old, wouldn't you need support?😁

It's a shame visitor's can't go up to it but its totally understandable. The Oak has survived bad weather, and in the 1980s, vandals set fire to it. Thankfully, they managed to save it, but during the covid lockdowns, vandals also took chunks out of the trunk, trying to climb it.

We then carried on our walk along the trail. It looked as though there was an Easter Egg Hunt going on for the children.

Some of the trees were splitting, so metal rings had been placed around the trees to support them.

We passed a den building area. We used to build dens in the wood but these are much better.

Walking through the forest you can definitely imagine Robin Hood and his Merry Men riding through the forest, taking from the rich to give to the poor!
