Today I want to talk to you about growing corn. Corn has been planted for many years by our ancestors, there is even a written poetic work called Hombres de Maíz, it is a novel by the Guatemalan writer and Nobel Prize for Literature Miguel Ángel Asturias, published in 1949. Corn is a crop that It has been present in all Venezuelan fields, since my childhood my parents were farmers and they worked the land every year to plant corn, in my town where we plant small plots of land we call it conuco there we plant different items: Corn, Auyama, Beans and Beans. I have kept this peasant culture and teaching alive because I have followed the example of my parents by planting corn for self-consumption, to feed the animals and something important that my parents taught me is that we should plant every rainy season, then when the corn also taught me that we have to classify the best cob to select the seed that we are going to use next year.

Hoy quiero hablarles sobre el cultivo del maíz. El maíz ha sido sembrado durante muchos años por nuestros antepasados, incluso existe una obra poética escrita llamada Hombres de Maíz, se trata de una novela del escritor guatemalteco y Premio Nobel de Literatura Miguel Ángel Asturias, publicada en 1949. El maíz es un cultivo que ha estado presente en todos los campos venezolanos, desde mi niñez mis padres eran agricultores y labraban la tierra todos los años para sembrar maíz, en mi pueblo donde sembramos pequeños terrenos le llamamos conuco allí sembramos diferentes rubros: Maíz, Auyama, Frijoles y Frijoles. He mantenido viva esta cultura campesina y la enseñanza porque he seguido el ejemplo de mis padres sembrando maíz para el autoconsumo, para alimentar a los animales y algo importante que me enseñaron mis padres que debemos sembrar cada época de lluvia, luego cuando llega la cosecha de maíz también me enseñó que hay que clasificar la mejor mazorca para seleccionar la semilla que vamos a utilizar el próximo año.
This method of saving the seed has many advantages and disadvantages, the advantages would be that it produces your own quality seed and lowers the purchase costs, the disadvantages would be that it must be stored in a safe place to protect it from weevils. This year I was a little careless with the seed that I protected and I could not control the invasion of weevils that attacked my corn, today I had a lot of work and I activated myself with a technique that consists of using a metal mesh with many small squares nailed to the wood in the shape square, we placed that tool called sarandá on top of a wheelbarrow and there we proceeded to remove the weevils and clean the corn from being damaged, then I put it in bags to protect it again in a safe place.
Este método de guardar la semilla tiene muchas ventajas y desventajas, las ventajas serían que produce su propia semilla de calidad y abarata los costos de compra, las desventajas sería que debe almacenarla en un lugar seguro para protegerla de los gorgojos. Este año fui un poco descuidado con la semilla que protegí y no pude controlar la invasión de gorgojos que atacaron mi maíz, hoy tuve mucho trabajo y me activé con una técnica que consiste en usar una malla metálica con muchos cuadraditos clavados a la madera en forma de escuadra, colocamos esa herramienta que se llama sarandá encima de una carretilla y allí procedimos a quitarle los gorgojos y limpiar el maíz de que se dañe, luego lo puse en bolsas para protegerlo nuevamente en un lugar seguro.
In my country, the maize planting season begins in the month of May when the rains begin. I want to tell you that I will organize myself better to have good results and be a successful farmer.
