Las Sirgueras
They were part of my city many years ago.
For those of you who do not know what the Sirgueras is or were, I will tell you.
They were the strong women of my city who were dedicated to pulling the barges with all the goods up the river, the boats could not pass through the accumulation of sand in their channel, in those days there were no tugboats that could do the work, the tow it was the rope with which they pulled.
Ellas fueron parte de mi ciudad hace muchos años.
Para los que no sepáis que es o eran las Sirgueras os lo diré.
Eran las fuertes mujeres de mi ciudad que se dedicaban a tirar de las barcazas con todas las mercancías ría arriba, los barcos no podían pasar por la acumulación de arena en su cauce, en aquellos tiempos no había remolcadores que pudieran hacer el trabajo, la sirga era la cuerda con que tiraban.
The sirgueras had a very common job in those times of the 19th century, a few years before it was prohibited due to the great effort involved, but the Carlist wars led men to battle, the oxen that sometimes did the work were more expensive than the women, commerce and the life of the town continued its course and they took over.
Las sirgueras tenían un trabajo muy común en aquellos tiempos del siglo XIX unos años antes estaba prohibido por el gran esfuerzo que suponía, pero las guerras carlistas se llevaron a los hombres a batallar, los bueyes que hacían algunas veces el trabajo salía más caro que las mujeres, el comercio y la vida de la villa seguía su curso y ellas tomaron el relevo.
They were strong women who normally had no salary, they worked for the bread of the day and were known by the derogatory nickname of "ganapanes".
Eran mujeres fuertes que normalmente no tenían ni salario, trabajaban por el pan del día y se las conocían con el apodo despectivo de “ganapanes”.
Today the sculptor Dora Salazar reminds us of our old roots, apart from teaching us that women often did men's work.

We do not have to lose the stories of our peoples is what makes us all unique.
No tenemos que perder las historias de nuestros pueblos es lo que nos hace únicos a todos.
