Pebbles On A Beach

It's strange how simple things; things that we take for granted, actually have a beauty to them if we would only stop and look closely. I was on the beach a few days ago. The sun was low and I became fascinated by the pebbles. I watched as the shadows they cast changed the appearance of the beach as the sun sunk lower on the horizon.

I was taken in by their differences and yet their similarities. Some were grey, some were orange, some were white, some were black, some a mixture of colours and a few were dark red. Each one was different in shape and size. Some were completely smooth, while others sported jagged edges where the sea had bashed them together, tearing pieces out of them. All of them were individuals, and yet each one was related to the stones around them. In fact, one stone would just be a pebble, but together they form a beach.

Although the pebbles had many differences, they also shared similarities. All of them were hard, all of them had been through the same process of being rolled around by the sea, knocking and rubbing up against each other. Each one shaped by the other, or maybe some other stone that had long ago travelled further along the coast. All of them were in the process of being changed.

If I was to go back to the same place it wouldn't look exactly the same. The stones, that are completely inanimate will have been moved. Either by the coming in and out of the tide, or by a child picking some of them up and casting them into the sea. Many things can change the shape of a beach.

I'm sure there is some lesson here, if we would stop and contemplate. But all I know is that I enjoyed just watching and thinking about these simple pebbles on a beach.

Enjoy your day.
