Es un lago costero, ubicado en la parte más occidental de Venezuela en el estado Zulia este lago según otras definiciones debería ser considerado mar ya que está conectado mediante un estrecho de 54 km con el golfo de Venezuela y de allí al Mar Caribe y Océano Atlántico, se le dice lago porque es de agua dulce, tiene más de 135 afluentes entre los cuales se encuentra el Rio chama, Rio Limón y Rio Catatumbo, también contiene numerosas islas, como son las Islas de Zapara, San Carlos, Isla de la providencia, que coloquialmente se le dice (ISLA DE LOS LEPROSOS) donde años atrás se separaban estos enfermos alejados de la ciudad; esta isla posee hospital, un cementerio e iglesias entre otros, que actualmente se encuentran en ruinas, también en este flamante lago de Maracaibo ocurre unos de los fenómenos meteorológico más importante del mundo como es la aparición del Relámpago del Catatumbo que mediante una cantidad exagerada de relámpagos por año, genera hasta el 10% de la capa de ozono atmosférico del planeta, por ultimo y no menos importante podemos encontrar el majestuoso e imponente Puente sobre el lago o Puente General Rafael Urdaneta uno de los mas grandes del mundo y el tercero más largo de América Latina, este puente permitió unir las dos orillas y conectar Maracaibo con el resto de Venezuela.

El puente sobre el lago fue creado por Oscar Benedetti, que tras su imponente obra de acero y cemento fuera a contribuir a tantos misterios.
Este dicho puente posee varias pilas, pero la mas importante y la que tiene mayor altura es la pila 21 en la cual pasan las embarcaciones mas grandes y en la que también muere mucha gente a causa del suicidio, muchas son las vidas que han terminado de esta misma manera dicen que muchos episodios de amor fracturado, las desilusiones, las deudas y el miedo han hecho de la Pila 21 una fatídica salida.

Esta isla fue creada por Simón Bolívar totalmente alejados de la cuidad para que fueran atendidos los pacientes con lepra, el inédito pensamiento del libertador era evitar que estos pacientes sufrieran indigencia y rechazo continuo por la sociedad, esta isla estaba constituida por cárceles, hospitales, plazoletas, bibliotecas, iglesias, escuelas para que las personas pudiesen vivir tranquilamente sin rechazo. Actualmente solo encontramos ruinas de lo que un día fue esta isla para los pacientes enfermos.
