FINAL EPISODE OF NEMESIS.

NEMESIS (PART FOUR)

The day Ada was dumped in an unfamiliar place, she had cried until there were no tears left. When daylight gradually surrendered to the power of darkness, she had retired to a room in an uncompleted lock up shop just to keep her head for the night.

There, a group of boys saw her and pounced on her in an attempt to rape her. She was crying and begging for mercy but it fell on deaf ears. It was when she told them that she was pregnant that the leader of the group ordered them to stop. By then, they had torn off every bit of clothing on her body.

He had warned her to leave the area because it wasn't safe for her. Ada had covered herself and ran, not knowing where she was running to in particular. She just ran back to the roadside where there were traces of light from moving cars. She sat beside the road, placing her bag on her both laps and resting her head on it. The tears that seemed to have dried up came back with full force.

After sometime, someone tapped her at the back. She shuddered and threw her eyes open to behold a figure whose face wasn't clear in the darkness. The attempted rape incident that happened few moments ago flashed back in her memory. She wanted to scream and run but her strength deserted her. She only trembled in fear while surrendering herself to fate.

The person that tapped her flashed a torch light and she could see properly. It was a woman around the age of 50 years or thereabout who was coming back from the market. A basked rested firmly on her head with the aid of a head pad and a sack bag was on her left hand.

"My daughter, what are you doing on this lonely road at this ungodly hour?"

Ada couldn't say a word, only her tears flowed. She opened her mouth but her trembling lips couldn't produce a single sound. The woman did not need a soothsayer to tell her that the little girl was in so much distress.

"I am not going to leave you here all alone. At least, I can get you something to eat and a place to lay your head. By morning, you can now tell me what the problem is. Come on my child. Let's go."

Ada handed her her left hand, with her right hand clutching her bag. They had walked in silence until they got to the Woman's one room apartment.

The woman was Mrs Justina. She had lost her husband after fifteen years of marriage without giving hin a child. Her husband's people had driven her away with nothing after the burial. She had gotten herself a one room apartment and had lived alone ever since.

When Ada told her her story, she was deeply touched. She begged her to stay with her and promised to take care of her. Ada had no reason to say no.

Mrs Justina was a petty trader who made little from her sales. Ada did not want to be a liability so she started hawking pure water to support her. She made between #300 to #500 as profit daily and it went a long way. The woman loved her and saw her as the daughter she never had. Ada loved her too and took her as a mother.

Ada never went for any antenatal care but kept hustling with her protruding belly. One day, she had gone to hustle as usual but fell down by the roadside in pain. Obviously her delivery was due. People gathered to help her. That day, the state commissioner for women affairs was driving by and was attracted to the scene. She called an ambulance that took Ada to the hospital.

Ada had a difficult labour. Her pregnancy was not properly managed and complications arose during delivery. It was during the delivery process that the doctors discovered that the baby was not positioned properly in the womb and she was losing so much blood.

Thanks to the commissioner's intervention, an emergency cesarean section was arranged for her. Though her baby girl was safe, Ada suffered placenta complications and had to stay in the hospital for a month in order to recuperate completely.

When the commissioner heard Ada's story, she felt so much compassion. She had adopted her and promised to send her back to school once her child was old enough to be left in the care of her foster mother.

The commissioner also sent private investigators to locate Ada's home town. Their search was fruitful. Her father was still alive but their condition was nothing to write home about. Ada was slated to visit them once she was back on her feet.

Ada had named her daughter Kasiemobi, which translates to "console me".

When Kasie was six months old, Ada was enrolled into a secondary school. The commissioner sent a driver to drive her to school and bring her back home everyday.

One day Ada and her driver had gone to the outskirts of town to pick something. They got famished, saw a kiosk and decided to branch and buy some snacks and water.

Ada stepped down from the car and entered the kiosk and couldn't believe what she saw. The owner of the kiosk, sitted on the wheel chair was madam Gold!

Madam Gold survived her accident but sustained spine injuries that made her unable to walk again.

After she was discharged from the hospital crippled, without a job and her rent expiring. She had sold her car and taken her two younger children who survived the building collapse and moved to a more rural setting and secured s one room apartment. She used the remainder of the money in erecting the kiosk and stocked it with provisions. That became her only source of livelihood. She hadn't been able to go and check up on Junior and didn't know if he was alive or dead.

Ada starred at her in shock, with her mouth agape and arms akimbo. Painful memories standing flooding back. Her wounds were reopened. It felt like yesterday: How she was made to look like nothing; how she was abused physically, emotionally, sexually and psychologically; how she was thrown into a world of uncertainty; how she was left at the mercy of street urchins; the pregnancy that nearly took her life; everything was replaying in her mind like a recorded video.

The more Ada looked at her, she saw wickedness, exploitation, man's inhumanity to man, dehumanization of the highest order. No! She couldn't stand the sight of her anymore. She had to go!

When recognition dawned on Madam Gold, she simply bowed her head in shame. Is this how life is? She thought with tears in her eyes. She knew she needed to say something, even if it's just a "sorry". She knew it might not make any difference because she didn't expect the girl to jump into her arms and start smiling with her after everything. But she was going to try. Yes, she had to look her in the face and say something.

But when she looked up, it was too late, Ada was no longer there! She was walking away as fast as her legs could carry her. She was very close to the car and calling on her driver to come and take her away.

Madam Gold had begged her to come back, but she kept moving. Either she didn't hear her or she wasn't ready to pay attention. Soon, she was inside the car. The ash coloured Lexus 300 saloon car came on with her hissing sound, puffing out smoke and drove away, raising dust along the dusty path.

Madam Gold just watched. If her legs were intact, maybe she would have ran after her. She wished her children were around, but she had sent then to go and get something for lunch.

Ada couldn't control her tears as they drove. All she needed now to put herself together. She had already made up her mind to visit Madam Gold again. Life had already taught her a lesson, a bitter one at that. She would visit her again and tell her she had forgiven her. Maybe everything that played our was part of the plan to lead her to the fulfillment of her destiny.

Yes, she would visit her again! If not for anything, for the sake of Silas and Timothy...

THE END.
