Hello all Hivians and good people of the Gems community. Most of us may not be aware of some major happenings or events around the globe that took place on this day many years ago. I will therefore take us round the globe in a giffey to have a look at some of those historical events that took place on this day, friday the 07/10/2024 in history.
We begin today from Germany. Do you know that on this day in 1949, a constitution went into force in the Soviet occupation zone of Germany, forming the country of East Germany, which coexisted with West Germany until 1990, when the two Germanys rejoined.
From Germany, we move over to Afghanistan. Do you also know that on this day in 2000, after the September 11 attacks, American and British jets began hitting Taliban targets, sparking the commencement of the Afghanistan War.
From Afghanistan, we move over to the world of news and entertainment. Now, on this day in 1996, Fox News Channel, a satellite and cable news network founded by Roger Ailes for Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, was launched in the United States.
From the world of news and entertainment, we move over to the Palestine. Do you know that on this day in 1985, The Palestinian Liberation Front, a tiny section of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) led by Abu Abbas, hijacked the Achille Lauro, an Italian cruise ship which had left Genoa, Italy, on October 3 for a 12-day cruise of the Mediterranean Sea before the unfortunate event.
Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in history from Russia. Do you know that on this day in 1952, Vladimir Putin, Russia's President and Prime Minister, was born in Leningrad, Russia, U.S.S.R. [now St. Petersburg, Russia].
