Hola, queridos amigos de #HiveMexico. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una de las cosas más geniales que prepara el ayuntamiento de Atlixco para conmemorar el tan especial Día de Muertos y se trata del valle de catrinas. Este consiste en la presentación de varias catrinas monumentales hechas con la tradicional técnica de la cartonería. Estas enormes figuras están distribuidas en diferentes partes del pueblo y sirven de atractivo turístico para estas fechas.

El pasado fin de semana nos dimos a la tarea de visitar varias de ellas y están verdaderamente espectaculares, son enormes obras de arte que reflejan la cultura del país y de la región, ya que todas están elaboradas por artistas locales. En total son 10 catrinas, sin embargo, como el recorrido lo hicimos caminando acompañados de mi hijito de cuatro años, nos vimos limitados a visitar solo siete, las que estaban más cerca del zócalo del pueblo y una que queda cerca de un cerrito cerca de nuestra casa. Las otras tres se encuentran un poco más retiradas y Leo (mi hijo), no podía caminar más, de hecho, regresó a casa en brazos y prácticamente dormido.

Fue una experiencia genial poder recorrer el centro para admirarlas, este es el segundo año que lo hacemos y de verdad es un paseo que disfrutamos mucho, a pesar de la cantidad de turistas que nos encontramos, de los cuales cada vez parece haber más. Este año quizás no fueron tan vistosas como las de año pasado, pero creo que eso fue simplemente cuestión de iluminación, ya que las que se encontraban en el zócalo eran las únicas que contaban con una buena iluminación que hacía destacar sus diseños. Para bien o para mal, todas las catrinas fueron nuevas, y digo para mal porque me quedé con ganas de ver algunas que me habían gustado de la edición anterior. Aunque después me enteré de que justamente "El Diablito", mi favorita, estaba siendo exhibida en NYC, así de espectacular es que la exportaron, jajaja.

Espero que esta no sea la única actividad que prepare el ayuntamiento para conmemorar el Día de Muertos, puesto que el año pasado también organizaron una exposición de catrinas de famosos que estuvo espectacular, así que mis expectativas son altas, ojalá no me decepcionen. De igual manera, tengo la esperanza de que este valle de catrinas trascienda y se convierta en una tradicional anual, más allá de los gobiernos municipales, ya que es una experiencia hermosa tanto para visitantes, como para los que somos locales.

Visiting the Valley of Catrinas 2023

Hello, dear friends of #HiveMexico. Today I want to share with you one of the coolest things that the city council of Atlixco is preparing to commemorate the very special Day of the Dead, and that is the valle de catrinas. This consists of the presentation of several monumental catrinas made with the traditional technique of cartonería. These enormous figures are distributed in different parts of the town and serve as a tourist attraction for these dates.

Last weekend we visited several of them, and they are truly spectacular, huge works of art that reflect the culture of the country and the region, as they are all made by local artists. There are 10 catrinas in total, however, as we did the tour on foot accompanied by my four-year-old son, we were limited to visit only seven, the ones that were closest to the town's main square and one that is near a small hill near our house. The other three are a little further away and Leo (my son) could not walk any further, in fact, he returned home in his arms and practically asleep.

It was a great experience to be able to walk around the centre to admire them, this is the second year we have done it, and we really enjoyed it, despite the amount of tourists we met, of which there seem to be more and more. This year they were perhaps not as colourful as last year's, but I think that was simply a question of lighting, as the ones in the main square were the only ones with good lighting that made their designs stand out. For better or for worse, all the catrinas were new, and I say for worse because I was left wanting to see some that I had liked from the previous edition. Although later I found out that "El Diablito", my favourite, was being exhibited in NYC, that's how spectacular they exported it, hahaha.

I hope this is not the only activity that the city council is preparing to commemorate the Day of the Dead, since last year they also organized an exhibition of catrinas of celebrities that was spectacular, so my expectations are high, I hope they don't disappoint me. I am also hopeful that this valle de catrinas will transcend and become an annual tradition, beyond the municipal governments, as it is a beautiful experience for visitors and locals alike.
