When I was a 13 year old girl, I started watching baseball and basketball games on TV. I remember being a fan of the Leones del Caracas, but above all, a fan in love with the shortstop of that team, who was Omar Vizquel, a man 10 years older than me!
He also played in the Major Leagues, and I followed him wherever he went, and I was thrilled with the great plays he made (especially in the duo with Roberto Alomar in the Toronto Blue Jays), also in the awards for the best player at his position, in the All-Star games and so on.
I never got to see him in a stadium when he played in Caracas, because at home the only "rare" one who enjoyed watching that sport was me, so no one was willing to take me, but still through the screen I enjoyed the games until the end.
As time went by, I started to make an album of press photographs of his achievements, and they even made caricatures of him. An aunt helped me to collect those I saw in newspapers that were not bought at home, so my collection grew considerably.
So while other girls my age collected posters of singers and musical bands, I made my particular newspaper library with my baseball crush.
He was my "imaginary boyfriend" in my adolescence, and today I share with you this nice memory of some photos that I digitized before emigrating.
