About the Quote

Like the financial markets, anyone can do well when times are easy. Also like the financial markets, it takes good character and strength of will to do the right things during tough times in order to come out ahead later.

It's during hard days and tough times when one's true character is revealed. If it's good, then it's not a concern. But if it has flaws-- lack of discipline, given to vice, lack of mental toughness, inadequate abilities, ...-- they are revealed during the hard times. While it's not fun having to own up to those flaws, the hard times help one focus on fixing those flaws so that they go from being areas of concern to areas of strength (or at least no longer a concern).

Sometimes weather has a role to play in the hard days. For an athlete, it's necessary to bear down on effort to come out with an ugly win. Just being able to win is enough on days like that, never mind winning artistically or by a large margin or at the home field. For a business owner dealing with losses, ending the month with 1 dollar of profit is enough to end the red streak. It's during the hard times that we learn priceless lessons which help us dominate when the good times come back.
