Index4INDEX Card 167: Wayne Dyer 1

You cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can always control what goes on inside.

-- Wayne Dyer

About the Quote

Nearly everything in life is beyond our control: the weather, the economic situation, politics, even people we know. With those things and more outside our control, it's easy to let them dictate how we act and react and think.

If we let the outside dictate our thinking, that's the easy way to lose control of ourselves and to lose our sanity. In the long run, we end up unhealthy, diseased, and miserable.

Stuff happens. It happens all the time, and it happens to everyone. We can go on some tirade or long-winded rant about what happens to us, and while the release of pressure feels good it is only momentary.

We can't change what happens around us, but we can change how we react to what happens around us. We can look on the bright side of things as things happen. We can assess our situations and decide which courses of actions will work best forus. We can even let out a primal scream or have a good long cry-- but then we leave it behind to focus on what's ahead of us.

In computer science there is a term which describes the quote perfectly: GIGI (Garbage In, Garbage Out). More familiar to people is the old saying "You are what you eat."
